About Jim Sinegal
Jim Sinegal is the Co-founder of Costco Wholesale Corporation. Since retiring in January, 2012, Jim serves as a Director and Company Advisor. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of Costco Wholesale Corporation for 27 years and has been a Director of Costco since its inception.
Jim began his career in the retail business in 1954 when as an 18 year old college student he went to work for the legendary retail icon Sol Price at the discount store FedMart in San Diego. He remained working for Price for almost 30 years before striking out on his own to start Costco.
Costco today has revenues in excess of $100 billion and operates 648 warehouse/stores in 42 states, Puerto Rico and 9 countries. The company employees over 194,000 people worldwide and has earned the reputation as a fair and progressive employer.
Jim was named one of Business Week’s “Best Mangers” in 2003 and also named Time Magazine’s 2006 list of 100 most influential people. For the past 6 years has he been selected as one of the 30 most respected CEO’s by Barron’s Magazine. Additionally, in 2001, he was selected by Morningstar Investments as the “Outstanding CEO of the Year”. He serves as Trustee of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Trustee of Seattle University. He recently joined Seattle University’s Albers School as Senior Executive in Residence and serves in a similar capacity at his alma mater, San Diego State University
