A local couple has created a scholarship endowment that will benefit UW-Green Bay communication students and recall Green Bay’s rich pro football and mass-media tradition.

Christopher and Carolyn (Campshure) Sampson say the Green Bay Photojournalism Scholarship honors the memories and career paths of their respective fathers.

Theodore J. "Ted" Campshure had a 45-year tenure with the Green Bay Press-Gazette. He was a news and sports photographer before moving to production work with the photo-engraving staff. Allen "Big Al" Sampson was a longtime reporter, photographer and sports director, first with WBAY-TV 2 and later with WLUK-TV 11.

Each man had experience covering Hall of Fame coaches for the Green Bay Packers. Among Campshure's early assignments were shots of Curly Lambeau's teams from the sidelines at old City Stadium and at their Rockwood Lodge training camp near Dyckesville in the 1940s. Sampson was producer and co-host of “The Vince Lombardi Show,” believed to be the first weekly NFL coach’s program, and the voice of Packers pre-season football during the 1960s. Sampson passed away in August 2002, Campshure in August 2006.

“They were local guys — my dad from Fond du Lac and Carolyn’s from Green Bay — who traveled far and sent us to college thanks to their ability as photographers,” Christopher Sampson says.

“The Green Bay market has always been high-quality. Whether it’s the Packers influence, or that so many national companies were headquartered here… for a small city, we have always had major-league opportunities in media. We hope that continues for today’s students.”

Both Carolyn and Christopher Sampson attended UW-Green Bay in the late 1970s. Carolyn, plat map coordinator for the Department of Transportation’s Northeast Wisconsin district, studied geography and cartography. Christopher studied journalism and is currently employed in the University’s marketing and communication office.

Eligible to apply for the Green Bay Photojournalism Scholarship will be continuing students of print or electronic photojournalism. The first award will be made in 2007-08, providing a stipend of at least $750 toward one year’s tuition.
