UW-Green BaySummer Camps
High School Summer Art Studio: June 24-29, 2012
For students entering grades 8-12+
Daily Class Hours:
- 8:30 am - 4:00 pm Monday - Thursday
- 8:30 am - 3:00 pm on Friday (The Final Exhibition show will be from 3:00-4:00pm. Campers will be dismissed when the show has concluded).
Camp Fees:
- Commuter Fee: $249 (includes instruction and camp t-shirt)
- Resident Fee: $549 (includes instruction, room and board, counselor supervision, evening activity transportation, and camp t-shirt). The cost of evening activities will vary depending on the camper's choice. It is recommended that students bring $20-$30 with them to camp for activities and snacks.

A NOTE ABOUT SUPPLY LISTS: The supply list linked to each class are suggestions. You are not required to purchase everything on the list. These supplies can be purchased at an art supply store OR at craft stores, e.g. Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Ben Franklin, Walmart. Minimal supplies are actually needed for most classes and others are suggested to enhance the 'experimental' aspect of the class." Please call or send us an e-mail if you have questions.

Photography in Black and White

With artist instructor Jenna Bigott you will learn all aspects of 35mm photography and printing black and white photos in a state-of-the-art darkroom. You will learn techniques practiced by such masters as Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange. You will be exposed to an array of methods including studio and outside shots, dramatic lighting effects, as well as developing and printing your own photos.
Please bring a 35mm SLR camera. NO DIGITAL CAMERAS!

Books That Bind: The Fine Art of Book Making - NEW!

During this fast paced week, you will learn the fine art of bookmaking with book artist Kathy Hackbarth. You will learn to create your own "Paste Paper" for book covers so that your books will truly be "one-of-a-kind"! We will begin with "Japanese Stab Bound Books" that have a visible binding using waxed linen and beading. Later in the week you'll make a book that is a design of your choosing. There will be many styples of books to choose from and you will be able to choose from several more complicated styles. You will complete four or five books during this exciting weeklong class.

Move over Armani! After a fun journey to a local thrift shop, you will be ready to create your own designer duds under the tutelage of Cory Linsmeyer. You will create your own patterns, hand and machine sew them fashioning completely original haute couture, and show off your fabulous inventions during a public exhibition. See if YOU have what it takes to become famous! Please bring $10 for the field trip to the thrift store.

Multi-Media Art Installation - NEW!

This innovative class provides a wonderful opportunity for you to work with other campers experimenting with sound, video, performance art, sculpture, and painting, creating a one-of-a-kind fine art installation. Instructor Arda Ishkhanian will introduce you to the history of Fine Art Installation and the artists who worked with this form of self-expression: Marcel Duchamp, Nam June Paik, and Rose Skinner to name a few. After group discussions and collaborative planning, you will sketch out your ideas and make aesthetic decisions as you develop the concept and put together your multi-media installation. We will go to a thrift shop, choosing materials to incorporate in this fantastic project. Please bring a little extra money to spend while there.

Past and present techniques collide as you explore the realm of abstract painting. A combination of new masterpieces and re-purposed old works will allow you to focus on developing your own techniques and styles of painting. Whether it is creating new and inspiring works or altering old photographs and paintings, the jouney from kitsch to fine art will be exhilarating! You will have the opporunity to give back to the community by taking a trip to the thrift store to find lost treasures to alter and change as you incorporate them in your paintings. You will need $10 to spend on materials you will purchase during this field trip. A fun and friendly environment awaits you where the typical will become extraordinary with the flip of the brush! Computer Animation

Do you wish your drawings and cartoons could jump off the page? They can and will during this popular class. Have fun breathing new life into your drawings during this character animation course led by instructor, Tom Wallestad. Learn traditional animation theory, principles, and techniques and apply them through the powerful Flash computer program. Each camper will explore character development, invent a storyline, and create cartoon animated shorts. Find out about the history of animation and its exciting future. Give life to your art. Sign up early. Seating in the lab is limited.

Ceramics: Using the Potter's Wheel and Advanced Hand-Building Techniques in Raku Firing

Learn the secrets of throwing on the potter's wheel from professional ceramist, Dean Hoegger. This gifted instructor will guide you through the wheel-throwing process while encouraging you to create advanced forms such as lidded vessels, section pots, and altered wheel-thrown pieces. You will also learn hand building methods to create larger pots and sculptural forms. Raku firing, the use of fire and smoke to achieve dramatic glazing effects, will insire you as you become part of this time-honored tradition. This intensive workshop welcomes novice and experienced campers alike. You'll love the results!
Lab Fee: $20
An $8 ceramic tool kit may be purchased the first day of class. Campers may also bring their own ceramic tools. Please bring 1/2 gallon or one gallon plastic ice cream type bucket and a small sponge. Campers should wear long blue jeans or other heavy cotton pants, a long-sleeved cotton shirt, shoes, and socks for raku firing which takes place Thursday and Friday. A small notebook or sketchbook is recommended to help you sketch out your ideas.

Under the creative guidance of drawing instructor, Sara Tlachac, you will advance your artistic skills by creating both two and three-dimensional art. You will be rendering self-portraits and drawing from the live model and you will also be bringing the figure to life through building life-sized body sculptures. This exciting class is an essential course for portfolio development. It will prepare you for advanced figure drawing and sculpture.
