Fiber Arts - Register
Online
Instructor: Asst. Prof. Alison Gates, Communication and the Arts
(Art)
Become
a Fiber Artist! Felt is probably the oldest of all textiles, originally discovered
by shepherds who placed small pieces of sheep’s wool in their clogs to
protect their feet. Today, we use felt for all kinds of creatively inspired
items. In this course, we will start your felted project by dyeing raw wool
fleece with Kool-Aid colors! Then, using our colored woolen, we will work it
into a felted box, pouch or sculptural object by using both modern technology
and a little old-fashioned elbow grease.
Alison Gates holds an MFA in textiles from the University of Washington, where she learned to make felt. She has taught courses in fibers and textiles at the Seattle Art Museum Art Camp, The Appleton Art Center, East Tennessee State University, and currently at UWGB, where she has been the textiles professor since 2001.
