Summer Art Studio - High School
June 20 - June 25, 2010
For students entering grades 8-12
Daily Class Hours: 8:30 am-4:00 pm, Monday through Thursday and 8:30-3:00 pm on Friday to prepare for the final exhibition.
- Commuter Fee: $249 (includes instruction and camp t-shirt)
- Resident Fee: $549 (includes instruction, room and board,
counselor supervision, and evening activity transportation) The cost
of evening activities will vary depending on the camper's choice.
It is recommended that students bring $20-$30 with them to camp for activities
and snacks.

supplies list linked to each class are suggestions. You are
not required to purchase everything on the list. These supplies
can be purchased at an art supply store OR at craft stores, e.g. Michael's,
Hobby Lobby, Ben Franklin, Walmart. Minimal supplies are actually needed for
most classes and others are suggested to enhance the 'experimental' aspect

Photography in Black and White

Working with Jenna Bigott you will learn all aspects of photography and printing your black and white photographs. You will learn techniques practiced by such masters of photography as Ansel Adams and Dorthea Lange. From shooting to developing to printing, your instructor and her assistant will lead you through an exciting array of methods. You will be shooting in nature, as well as in the studio, you will explore various aspects of lighting to enhance and dramatize models in staged and performance attitudes.
Please bring a 35mm SLR camera (NO DIGITAL!) and an open and creative mind.

Multi-Media Figure Drawing

Under the creative guidance of drawing instructor, Sara Tlachac, you will advance your artistic skills by creating both two and three-dimensional art. You will be rendering self-portraits and drawing from the live model, and you'll also be bringing the figure to life doing life-sized body casting. This exciting class is an essential course for portfolio development. It will prepare you for advanced figure drawing and sculpture.

Move over Armani! After a fun journey to a local thrift shop, you will return to the Fashion Design classroom ready to create your own designed duds. You will create your own patterns from your own unique designs, hand and machine sew them together as completely original haute couture and show off your fabulous inventions during a public exhibition at the end of an educational and enjoyable week. See if YOU have what it takes to become part of one of the most exciting careers in the world.

Ceramics: Using The Potter’s Wheel and Advanced Hand Building
Techniques for Raku Firing

Learn the secrets of how to throw on the potter's wheel from a professional ceramist, Dean Hoegger. You will be guided through the wheel-throwing experience, creating advanced forms such as lidded vessels, section pots and altered wheel-thrown pieces. You will also learn hand building techniques to create larger pots and sculptural forms. Raku firing, the use of fire and smoke to achieve dramatic glazing effects, is a sure bet to turn you on to this time honored tradition. This intensive workshop welcomes novice and experienced students alike.

the first day of class or students may bring their own tools.)
Metals and Jewelry

Design and create jewelry under the masterful eye of Erica Becker. You will learn the basics of jewelry making--piercing, forming, forging and soldering--while working with brass, bronze, silver and nickel. Working with a combination of metals and techniques will open you to a better understanding of the versatility available to you in the fine art of creating your own jewelry designs.

Computer Animation

Do you wish your drawings and cartoons could jump off the page? Have fun breathing
new life into your drawings during this character animation course led by instructor
Tom Wallestad. Learn traditional animation theory, principles
and techniques and apply them through the powerful Flash computer program. Each
student will explore character development, invent a storyline, and create cartoon-animated
shorts. Find out about the history of animation and its exciting future. Give
life to your art- sign up early seats in the lab are limited!

Working with painting instructor, Arda Ishkanian, is like being transported into a new dimension of color and form. This accomplished artist will lead you on an exciting artistic journey, helping you gain confindence in your work while broadening and deepening your knowledge of art and your existing painting skills. As well as being introduced to the work of the masters, you will learn new painting methods and techniques while bonding with students who share your interest in art.
