Summer Art Studio - Middle School

June 15-19, 2009 (Day Camp only)
For commuter students entering grades 6-9

(If you are entering grades 8 or 9 in the Fall, you may register for the Senior High Summer Art Studio Camp, if you wish to stay in the campus dorms.)

Daily Class Hours:

8:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday thru Thursday

8:30 am- 3:00 pm on Friday (to prepare for the final exhibition.)

Students must select two classes.

A NOTE ABOUT SUPPLIES: The supplies list linked to each class are suggestions. You are not required to purchase everything on the list. These supplies can be purchased at an art supply store OR at craft stores, e.g. Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Ben Franklin, Walmart. Minimal supplies are actually needed for most classes and others are suggested to enhance the 'experimental' aspect of the class." Please call or e-mail us if you have questions.

 

Ceramics: Introduction to Wheel Throwing for Raku Firing

There’s smoke, there’s fire… there’s ceramics class with Dean Hoegger! Learn the basics of hand-building techniques for making functional and sculptural forms and be introduced to throwing pots on a wheel. Set your goals high as forms may be up to 30 inches tall! Learn the raku firing process, using fire and smoke to achieve dramatic glaze effects. Professional potter and teacher, Dean Hoegger, gives lots of individual attention to the newbies as well as the experienced among you! Lab Fee: $20 (Also a $7.99 tool kit may be purchased the first day of class or students may bring their own tools.)

 

Walk on the Wild Side: Wildlife Illustration

Join drawing instructor, Sara Tlachac, and go on a wildlife adventure. Capture wonderful creatures of the wild with pencil, pastels and charcoal. Develop and improve your drawing skills through gesture drawing, shading and the use of grid method to render your images in proportion. Each student will create an impressive, large-scale drawing. Your animal will leap off your drawing paper!

 

Introduction to Fine Art Digital Photography

Digital photography instructor, Tammy Resulta, will not only introduce you to the workings of your digital camera, but Photoshop as well. While taking photographs both in the environment and in the studio, you'll learn about the editing process, composition, and other skills involved in creating dramatic imagery. You will examine the work of famous photographers such as Sally Mann and Tina Barney and come to view photography as Fine Art.

PLEASE NOTE: This workshop does NOT include darkroom work. Bring your own digital camera and a removable memory card to view and print your images.

Cartooning and Comic Book Illustration

Instructor Tom Wallestad has a passion for cartooning. If you do too, this class is for you! You will also learn basic cartooning drawing skills, the foundations of penciling, inking, coloring and transferring techniques. Explore the unique story-telling language of comics and graphic novels and apply what you learn to your development as a cartoonist. This class fills early! Register now!

 

Introduction to Acrylic Painting

Instructor Arda Ishkanian is wild about color. This professional artist will help you transfer your emotions and moods, tensions and tranquility to the canvas. You will learn a variety of acrylic painting techniques including working with brush and/or spatula, glazing, impasto and collage. Simple exercises will help spark your imagination and deepen your understanding of texture, shape, form and interesting imagery.

From Junk to Jewelry!

Be the talk of your class! Transform ordinary cast-off objects into wearable art. Jewelry instructor, Erica Becker, will not only introduce you to the basics of jewelry-making, but she'll encourage you to come up with knock-your-socks-off bling! Rummage through thrift stores. Match that lonely single earring with other found baubles and work them together in unique bracelets, necklaces and earrings. You'll have lots of fun and learn the fine art of the craft--sawing, riveting and shouldering.

Sculpture

This sculpture workshop with Casey Early-Krueger allows you to test the boundaries of your imagination! Using the most basic of tools you will create amazing, one-of-a-kind, 3-dimensional art. Draw with wire and create Alexander Calder like figures. Alter books and become the author of your unique artistic and literary reality. Work with cardboard as you create characters and structures out of paper mache. Dress in old clothes and prepare to get down and dirty!
