Designing a Spacesuit - May 8th - Registration Still Open!
Instructor: Jim Schmidt, Special Programs Coordinator for the WI Space Grant Consortium
In this session, students will explore the challenges that engineers face as they design spacesuits for missions to the Moon and Mars. Students will look at the concepts of pressure and radiation as they develop their own models of potential designs. Students will see how pressure changes as objects are compressed in a chamber. They will also observe the impact that a vacuum has on various materials. Finally students will compare materials based on their effectiveness for insulation and whether or not those materials are practical for protective suits that future astronauts could one day be wearing.
