Lessons from the movie The Pursuit of HappYness
“Going for it” versus “Waiting for it”
- Be proactive:
Don’t depend on email
Pick up the phone
Don’t just blast out resumes
Ask for 10 minutes on the phone or in person to increase opportunities to be noticed
- Targeting the company or organization for which you want to work
- Geography
- Salary range
Types of “interviews”
- New position, promotion or transfer
- Phone or face-to-face
- Formal or informal
- Social outings
- “Chance” meetings (airplanes, sporting events, etc.)
Preparing for the interview: Be smart and organized
- Doing your homework and research
- Developing a great resume
- Knowing the outcome you want to achieve from the interview
- Anticipating questions from the interviewer
- Rehearsing before the interview
- Knowing the interviewer or team of interviewers
- Preparing questions to ask the interviewer (professional development, compensation package, how you will be evaluated if selected for the position, etc.)
- Avoiding assumptions:
“just a formality”
“piece of cake,”
“I don’t need to prepare,”
“I’m not going to want this job anyway”
- Avoiding getting lost – knowing where you’re going
- Arriving early or on-time
- Staying calm
- The more prepared you are, the less nervous you will be
- Showing character and personality in addition to capabilities
- Summarizing key points at the end of the interview:
“This position very much appeals to me because …..”
“I feel qualified for this position because…”
“I’d like to be hired because…”
- Offering references and work samples

- Voice – tone, energy
- Speech patterns- avoid “um” and “ya know”
- Grammar
- Attire (accessories, clothing)
- Grooming (hair, makeup, jewelry, body piercing, body art)
Following up
- Handwritten thank you notes
- Calls
- Brief emails
Keeping your options open
- Stay proactive and open minded
- Apply for more than one position
- Ask friends, family members, peers, professors and former bosses to keep you in mind for job openings for which you might qualify
