Job Interviewing Tele-Seminar
Presented by Laura Pennino

For Phi Kappa Phi on May 8, 2007, 1:30 p.m. CDT

Lessons from the movie The Pursuit of HappYness

“Going for it” versus “Waiting for it”

  • Be proactive:
    Don’t depend on email
    Pick up the phone
    Don’t just blast out resumes
Ask for 10 minutes on the phone or in person to increase opportunities to be noticed
  • Targeting the company or organization for which you want to work
  • Geography
  • Salary range

Types of “interviews”

  • New position, promotion or transfer
  • Phone or face-to-face
  • Formal or informal
  • Social outings
  • “Chance” meetings (airplanes, sporting events, etc.)

Preparing for the interview: Be smart and organized

  • Doing your homework and research
  • Developing a great resume
  • Knowing the outcome you want to achieve from the interview
  • Anticipating questions from the interviewer
  • Rehearsing before the interview
  • Knowing the interviewer or team of interviewers
  • Preparing questions to ask the interviewer (professional development, compensation package, how you will be evaluated if selected for the position, etc.)
  • Avoiding assumptions:
    “just a formality”
    “piece of cake,”
    “I don’t need to prepare,”
“I’m not going to want this job anyway”
  • Avoiding getting lost – knowing where you’re going
  • Arriving early or on-time
  • Staying calm
  • The more prepared you are, the less nervous you will be
  • Showing character and personality in addition to capabilities
  • Summarizing key points at the end of the interview:
“This position very much appeals to me because …..”
“I feel qualified for this position because…”
“I’d like to be hired because…”
  • Offering references and work samples

Image

  • Voice – tone, energy
  • Speech patterns- avoid “um” and “ya know”
  • Grammar
  • Attire (accessories, clothing)
  • Grooming (hair, makeup, jewelry, body piercing, body art)

Following up

  • Handwritten thank you notes
  • Calls
  • Brief emails

Keeping your options open

  • Stay proactive and open minded
  • Apply for more than one position
  • Ask friends, family members, peers, professors and former bosses to keep you in mind for job openings for which you might qualify
