Areas of Emphasis
Students complete requirements in one of the following areas of emphasis. Each course, unless it is a repeatable one and is repeated, may only be used to fulfill one requirement.
Literature
Supporting Courses, 12 credits

The courses used to fulfill the required 6 credits of supporting-level English electives and the 21 credits of upper-level English electives must be distributed so that the five criteria below are satisfied.
Criterion 1:
Minimum of 3 credits (either upper-level or supporting-level) from any primarily pre-1800 British literature course besides Shakespeare, such as:
- ENGLISH 214 Introduction to English Literature I, 3 credits
- ENGLISH 315 The English Novel: 1700 to the 1850s, 3 credits
- ENGLISH 320 Major Drama: Renaissance Plays, 3 credits
- ENGLISH 335 Literary Eras: 18th Century British Literature, 3 credits
Criterion 2:
Minimum of 3 credits (either upper-level or supporting-level) from any primarily post-1800 British literature course, such as:
- ENGLISH 215 Introduction to English Literature II, 3 credits
- ENGLISH 316 The English Novel: The 1850s to the Present, 3 credits
- ENGLISH 335 Literary Eras: Contemporary British Literature, 3 credits
- ENGLISH 436 Major Author: Virginia Woolf, 3 credits
Criterion 3:
Minimum of 6 credits (either upper-level or supporting-level) from any American literature course, such as:
- ENGLISH 216 Introduction to American Literature I, 3 credits
- ENGLISH 217 Introduction to American Literature II, 3 credits
- ENGLISH 322 Major Poetry: American, 3 credits
- ENGLISH 331 Major American Prose Fiction, 3 credits
Criterion 4:
Minimum of 3 credits on the Study of Language, such as:
- ENGLISH 340 History of the English Language, 3 credits
- HUM STUD 321 Language and Society, 3 credits
or - Minimum of six credits of college-level, non-English language courses
Criterion 5:
Minimum of 3 credits (either upper-level or supporting-level) from any world literature course such as:
- ENGLISH 218 World Literatures I, 3 credits

Creative Writing
