Continuing Education

Many of the instructors who teach classes for the Wisconsin Community-Based Care and Treatment Training Registry are required to have continuing education in order to renew as an instructor. Below is information and resources to help find continuing education opportunities.

The definition of continuing education is: An instructional program that brings participants up to date in a particular area of knowledge or skills from a reputable source. Continuing education should be new training that improves knowledge or skills, not repeated training or training that the participant is already approved to teach.

Reputable source provides a thorough, well-reasoned theory, argument, discussion, etc. based on strong evidence. Examples may be scholarly, peer-reviewed articles or books written by researchers, colleges, universities, professional trade associations, consultants, and experts with experience in the field they are teaching.

The registry will accept actual training received from a web-based source, classroom training or video training. When submitting evidence of continuing education, please submit documentation on how the course increases your knowledge as an instructor related to the subjects taught and adult education. If a training source is questionable, please e-mail registry@uwgb.edu.

The required hours for each class are as follows:

  • Fire Safety: Complete six hours of documented continuing education. Three of the hours must relate to fire safety. The remaining three hours may relate to either fire safety or to principles of adult learning (classes about how to teach adults.) Documentation of these trainings will be requested during the renewal process. Fire Safety | 6 Hours of Continuing Education Every 2 years || First 3 hours must be: | Related to Fire Safety (increasing Knowledge) || Second 3 hours may be either: | 3 additional hours related to Fire Safety (increasing knowledge) or 3 hours related to increasing knowledge on how to train or teach adults.
  • First Aid and Choking: Complete six hours of documented continuing education. Three of the hours must relate to first aid and choking. The remaining three hours may relate to first aid and choking or to principles of adult learning (classes about how to teach adults.) First Aid and Choking | 6 hours of continuing education every 2 years || first 3 hours must be | related to first aid and choking (increasing knowledge) || Second 3 hours may be either | 3 hours related to First aid or 3 hours related to increased knowledge on how to train or teach adults
  • Medication Administration: Complete twelve hours of documented continuing education. Nine of the hours must be related to medication. The remaining three hours may be related to either medication or to principles of adult learning (classes about how to teach adults.)

  • Standard Precautions: Complete six hours of documented continuing education. Three of the hours must be related to Standard Precautions. The remaining three hours may relate to either Standard Precautions or to principles of adult learning (classes about how to teach adults.)

Requirements for submitting continuing education hours

Classes should be documented with the date of the class, title of the class, length of the class, name of the instructor and instructor signature. This can be done with a certificate, course outline, or by a written statement from the person teaching the course.

Online learning should document the date of the learning, length of the learning experience, title of the course or video, name of the presenter or instructor, and documentation of completion of the course. If the online learning does not have a document that shows completion, the person doing the online learning should have documentation of what was learned from the course and how it improved the instructor’s knowledge related to the subject they teach, in addition to the date of the learning, length of the learning experience, title of the course or video, the URL where the video was found, and name of the presenter or instructor. Online training must be at least 30 minutes long to count towards the continuing education requirement.

Book and video learning should be submitted by documenting the date and time the person spent viewing or reading, the name and author, and have documentation of what was learned from the course and how it improved the instructor’s knowledge related to the subject they teach.   • Date of training
  • Length of training
  • Title of the course or training
  • Name of the presenter, instructor or company presenting the Training
  • Documentation of completion (such as a certificate) or a paragraph listing how the training increased your knowledge as an instructor
