UW-Green
Bay focus is bonding, better start for first-year students
Historically, too many first-year college students, even those with decent academic
potential, don't stick with it. (Roughly one in four freshmen will drop out
or stop out before sophomore year.) New at UW-Green Bay this summer is FOCUS
(First-year Opportunities and Connections for UWGB Students), a campuswide effort
to help these individuals. Elements include changes in the registration and
orientation program previously known as SOAR, the continuation of popular programs
already in place, the designation of one particular mentor as a freshman's "first-year
contact" and, overall, a more concerted effort to foster early success. The
goal is for newcomers to bond with both campus and peers. The program will debut
in June with FOCUS on Registration and Resources for fall's new freshmen.
'Nurse Without Borders' will visit Green Bay
Mary Lightfire, a nurse who has volunteered for more than 10 years to bring
emergency aid to some of the world's most troubled spots through the international
organization Doctors Without Borders, will speak twice on Wednesday, March 5
on campus. She will be the keynote speaker at noon at the annual Women's Recognition
Luncheon (ticket required) and she will also present a free lecture at 8 p.m.
in the Phoenix Room of the University Union. She has been to Afghanistan and
Somalia twice each, Kenya ("countless times"), Uganda ("three or more times"),
Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia,
Tajikistan, Nicaragua and Macedonia.

Looking
ahead (knock on wood) to 'March Madness'
There figures to be plenty of interest locally when the 64-team bracket for
the 2003 NCAA Divison I women's basketball tournament is announced at 4 p.m.
Sunday, March 16, on ESPN. First-round games will be played Saturday and Sunday,
March 22 and 23. Should a certain local team advance, you might be interested
to know the list of potential opening-round sites: Boulder, Colo.; Athens, Ga.;
Norfolk, Va.; Eugene, Ore.; West Lafayette, Ind.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Stanford,
Cal.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Storrs, Conn.; Manhattan, Kan.; Ruston,
La.; Raleigh, N.C.; Norman, Okla.; University Park, Pa.; and Lubbock, Tex. New
this year, all tournament games will be televised live on ESPN or ESPN2.
Rare
snow day makes for super Snow Bowl
The weather gods were smiling on UW-Green Bay as a five-inch snowfall came just
in time for the annual Snow Bowl flag football tournament last month. Instead
of a rock-hard forzen tundra, the Phoenix Sports Center playing fields adjacent
to campus housing had a soft cushion for the eight teams and 120 student competitors.
The winning team? All were winners with the heated tent, chili lunch,
hot chocolate and cider, a competitive tournament, and a visit from unofficial
commissioner Bruce Shepard and the Catch Touchdowns team prevailed 44-7
in the title game.
