Chancellor's FYI | November 2003

	Giving thanks: For friends, faculty and respect for the calling Greetings from Green Bay’s University of Wisconsin! We are already two-thirds of the way through the fall semester. By now, our 1,200 freshmen have developed a solid understanding of the rigors of a university education. Our 4,200 continuing students, meanwhile, are no doubt promising themselves to work ahead, finish all papers and projects by Thanksgiving and start studying weeks early for December finals. Having been in both shoes, myself, I remember the apprehension of the former and the improbability of the latter. In either case, here’s hoping that hard work and academic success again go hand in hand. November is a busy month not only for students but for faculty and staff members, too. Longer hours are not uncommon as the semester progresses, problems grow more complex and students seek additional guidance. Our dedicated professionals deserve wider recognition. I am delighted we have a forum to foster that on Nov. 18 when we turn the spotlight on UW-Green Bay’s exceptional professoriate during the Founders Association dinner program in the Phoenix Room. The topic was requested by Founders Board planners; they’re interested in meeting the faculty panelists and getting a glimpse inside the profession. I hope many of you will choose to join us. &nbps; Another occasion to salute faculty and staff is mid-year Commencement at the Weidner. I am always moved as our students cross the stage to accept diplomas and congratulations from their mentors. Special, too, are the students’ respectful nods and even cheers and applause when the student speaker proclaims something like, “The professors and staff here are absolutely outstanding,” or “We owe so much to our instructors.” That Dec. 20 ceremony will be a venue for more formal acknowledgement, as well, as we recognize Profs. Phil Clampitt and Ganga Nair as the newest recipients of named professorships.		Our students can have no finer community-minded role model than Dorothy Blair, center. Her recent gift creating our first endowed chair reflects her respect for what higher education is all about. Posing with Dorothy at last month's clebration dinner are UW-Green Bay students Andrew Long, Jon Virant, Alexis Watson, Megan Habermann, Heather Ribble and Heather Moorhouse. Dr. Clampitt, a highly regarded scholar in organizational communication, will succeed Prof. Ismail Shariff as the Philip J. and Elizabeth B. Hendrickson Professor in Business. Dr. Nair, known internationally for his work with forests and plant diseases, will succeed Prof. Mike Morgan as Herbert Fisk Johnson Professor of Environmental Studies. : It is fitting they be honored at our most important event, because a named professorship represents much of importance: • A prestigious honor • A vital element in advancing the academic experience • A tribute paid faculty by the larger community.
