CONCLUSION Finally, let me anticipate a question that must be troubling you. It would be troubling me. Didn't the Chancellor open talking about a fiscally and politically threatening environment too often devoid of long-range thinking? And now he says "grow" toward brighter futures? What, might you wonder, have I been smoking? First, let me acknowledge that the growth agenda will be a challenge. Given the times, it may be the most difficult political challenge UWGB has yet taken on. However, for me it is simple. Clear as a bell. Sit on our ... hands, accept the status quo, what will be our fate? It's a continuing spiral down. For us. For Wisconsin. The economists' best projections if we follow the status quo, trajectory are painfully clear: Mississippi, Alabama - and, Oregon - here we come. Or, we can act aggressively, with vision, with passion, and with our many allies. For our Community. For its University. For our State. I hope, like Cyndie and me, you find the full agenda - diversity, growth, connecting learning to life and campus to community - worthy of your fullest professional devotion. And, we both thank you for looking beyond recent travails and, instead, committing with us to being behind that agenda for the long term. Thank you. |
