Educating the Chancellor: The approach: 'Themes'

I have organized the report on our discussions around a series of “themes.” These themes are, usually, a mixture of ends and means, of goals and strategies, of answers to the question, “Where should we head?” and the question, “How should we get there?” Absent are the crisp distinctions between aims/objectives/goals/strategies/actions advocated by strategic planning gurus. But, the thinking about UWGB that I heard has a richness not fully captured by strictly linear thinking, and the focus on “themes” is my attempt to retain some of that power.

I heard so much, so much of value in our discussion, and much of that detail is lost in the need to focus on a few themes that span the breadth of the University. Here, I can only acknowledge that, while the report must focus on general subjects, the detail is found in the appended reports on individual sessions and, importantly, the detail has not been lost on me.

The themes do lead to possibilities for action. I have included some of the actions suggested by our discussions. These are not some final plan. I am not offering a UWGB “to-do” list. Rather, in the spirit of brainstorming — for that is where we currently are in the process — these actions have not been subjected to thorough critical appraisal, and the list of them is certainly not complete. They are offered for your consideration and to stimulate your best innovative thinking as you decide how we, all of us, will weave the emerging themes into the life of the University
