Trading
cards star student mentors
They
have the look of baseball cards, but the “stars” of a super-select
group of about 200 separate trading cards are actually UW-Green Bay students
who mentor local fifth-graders in the highly popular Phuture Phoenix program.
The program promotes learning as something cool, and inspires children
from low-income backgrounds to make college part of their dreams. Nearly
1,500 youngsters from nine school districts visited UW-Green Bay in October
on two Phuture Phoenix tour dates. The cards, a new wrinkle this year,
were a hit. Each fifth-grader left with a keep sake or two (autographed)
of the University students who guided his or her small group. Follow-up
visits to schools keep the friendships alive, with the college-age role
models often sharing a message of “If I can do it, you can, too!”

'50 You Should Know' in a big way
How connected is UW-Green Bay in the community? Maybe this is a good measure:
When the Bay Business Journal published its annual “50 People You
Should Know” list last month, readers literally could not turn a
page without meeting someone with UW-Green Bay ties. In the spotlight
were faculty members John Katers, Meir Russ, Don McCartney and Sarah Meredith,
as well as a number of University alumni, and local residents who populate
key campus advisory boards. In all, nearly one-third of the difference-makers
on the list have strong UW-Green Bay connections. The BBJ is a publication
of the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. Watch for additional recognition
of these campus/community connections in the December/January issue, sponsored
by the Chancellor’s Council of Trustees..
