USS
Green Bay crew gets warm welcome, hometown mementos
U.S.
Navy Lt. James Stockman (far left) was proud to return to campus recently
in connection with the christening of the USS Green Bay. A 1996 graduate
of UW-Green Bay who serves with the Naval Office of Community Outreach,
Stockman helped lead officers of the ship on a publicity tour of the vessel’s
namesake city. Chancellor Bruce Shepard, center, hosted a reception at
Lambeau Cottage on the bayshore, where the visitors mingled with students,
faculty and staff who are Navy veterans. Shepard thanked all present for
their military service, and provided the crew with some UW-Green Bay memorabilia
to be displayed aboard the ship, including a “Connecting learning
to life” flag. It is expected that the 684-foot, 25,000-ton USS
Green Bay will enter service in 2008 as a transport vessel for Marines
and their equipment.
Say
'cheese,' future Phoenix!
That’s Liam Gurung, 5 months old, with two of UW-Green Bay’s
most popular and award-winning professors: his dad, Regan, and Bill Laatsch.
The occasion was last month’s Bill Laatsch Cheese Classic, held
under the tent at Santaga Stadium. The light-hearted Homecoming tradition
brings students, alumni and staff together for a little fun, led by the
6-foot-4 Laatsch and his willingness to play host and don a mouse suit
as “the Big Cheese.”

“Former
Chancellor Weidner, Ken Fleurant and others were very influential professors.
I guess that is one of the things I have taken with me from those years
is the importance of teaching. I have won numerous teaching awards over
time, and the heritage of that dates to my UW-Green Bay days.”
