| The
UW System and UW-Green Bay are embracing what’s
called the Voluntary
System of Accountability. This national project,
which has been led by AASCU and the National Association
of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, is designed
to improve understanding of how public colleges and
universities perform. As UW System President Kevin Reilly noted, the new project will demonstrate that accountability is more than a buzzword. It will provide students and their families, taxpayers, legislators and other members of the public with useful information that is easy to find, easy to read and easy to understand. It will have a major focus on learning outcomes that are critical for success in the global economy. Colleges and universities participating in the project will provide consistent, comparable information on everything from the costs of attendance, evidence of student learning, and student perceptions of their college experience. The information will be communicated through a Web-based College Portrait, which will enable the public to easily compare and contrast institutions. Particularly valuable, I believe, will be the unavoidable dialogue that must occur as our faculty collegially discuss, debate, and determine, in consultation with many others on and off campus, how best to report to the public on achievement of our highest priority: the quality, completeness, and long-term meaningfulness of the learning opportunities we provide for students. The College Portrait even will include a “college cost calculator,” which will enable students and families to estimate the cost of attending a particular school and then make comparisons with costs at other schools. There’s something that any parent of a college student will find helpful! There are so many ways in which the public will be able to use this information. The most obvious is in helping prospective students and their parents make decisions about college. It also will provide employers with information on whether our graduates have the critical thinking, communication and analytical skills needed in the modern workplace. And it will give members of the campus community a broader understanding of their institution and how it compares to other universities. |
The
project will demonstrate that accountability is more
than a buzzword. It will provide students, taxpayers,
legislators and others useful information that is easy
to find, read and understand. In addition to making valuable information available to the public, the Voluntary System of Accountability will be a useful tool in helping us identify our University’s strengths and weaknesses and develop strategies for continuous improvement. I am delighted that Wisconsin’s public universities are among the first in the nation to embrace the new accountability system. Improved accountability is crucial as we work to strengthen relationships with our community, region and state. After all, UW-Green Bay and other public colleges and universities will flourish in the 21st century only if we enjoy the confidence of the people we serve. I welcome your comments as we keep striving to make accountability and openness a part of everyday life at Green Bay’s University of Wisconsin. Let me know what you think about this and other topics by calling me at 465-2207 or sending me an e-mail at shepardb@uwgb.edu. Have a wonderful holiday season and thank you again for all you do to help your University of Wisconsin-Green Bay connect learning to life. Bruce Shepard |
