Chancellor's FYI, December 2007.

   “What I remember about
   UW-Green Bay
is the talented
   group of professors in accounting,
   especially Karl Zehms, Marilyn
Sagrillo and Ann Selk. Dr. Zehms’
   tests were grueling.”

December pomp: Lajdziak is speaker,
Olson, Kuehnes to receive awards

Jill Lajdziak is a 1979 graduate of UW-Green Bay and one of the nation’s most prominent female executives in the automotive industry.
The manager for General Motors’ Saturn division is the commencement speaker on Saturday, Dec. 15, when UW-Green Bay hosts mid-year graduation ceremonies at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. About 300 students are eligible to receive bachelor’s or master’s degrees.
Receiving Chancellor’s Awards for distinguished service to UW-Green Bay are former longtime administrator Gerald H. “Jerry” Olson and community leaders Carl and Mary Ellen Kuehne. Olson was dean of students for 21 years, better than half the institution’s 40-year history, and led facilities and program development still successful today. The Kuehnes have aided the development of UW-Green Bay through generous philanthropic support and Carl’s participation as an influential advocate for University growth and as a member of the Chancellor’s Council of Trustees.

25 you should know?
Laatsch, Nair head list
from UW-Green Bay

Veteran UW-Green Bay professors Bill Laatsch and Ganga Nair were deservedly recognized by the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce earlier this fall as worthy of selection to the popular “25 People You Should Know” list.
The only possible quibble is semantic: Most in Green Bay already know them, each having taught here since the late 1960s.
The honor annually recognizes difference-makers who “are the lifeblood of our community.” (Past staff and faculty selections include Juliet Cole, Donald Harden, John Katers, Don McCartney, Sarah Meredith and Meir Russ.) This year’s list also again showed the depth of the University’s impact with an impressive number of UW-Green Bay alumni.

Hosting world-class vocalists
UW-Green Bay was the only American site for preliminary and semi-final rounds of the 9th Montreal International Czech and Slovak Voice Competition in November. Posing at the Weidner Center (above) were three key contributors to the event and the University’s ability to host: producer and arts patron Sharon Resch of Green Bay; opera star and educator Alain Nonat of Montreal, who founded the competition; and UW-Green Bay Music Prof. Sarah Meredith, event director. Judges and competitors from as far away as New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Slovakia and the Czech Republic took part. The competition promotes traditional vocal repertoire among young singers and encourages international cultural exchange. For more, see www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/photoarch/
