tips cap in appreciation
to ‘architect’ Harden
When UW-Green Bay presented Donald Harden its highest community honor,
it was a move both campus and community could applaud.
Described as “a primary architect of many of UW-Green
Bay’s most visible success stories,” Harden received an extended
ovation as he accepted the Chancellor’s Award on stage at mid-year
commencement in December.
He acknowledged the crowd, above, as faculty and community
leaders and graduating seniors (foreground) stood in tribute.
From 1970 through 1994, when he retired as associate chancellor,
Harden helped speed UW-Green Bay’s emergence as a high-demand regional
institution. His achievements included the private partnership that built
modern residence halls; the growth of the Founders Association in support
of student scholarships and academics; leadership of the move to NCAA
Division I; and guidance of the University’s first capital campaign.
He continues to support UW-Green Bay through membership on the Chancellor’s
Council of Trustees and as a consultant to the $25 million Campaign for
UW-Green Bay.
Chancellor Bruce Shepard praised Harden’s civic involvement
while at UW-Green Bay and, later, Bellin Health Foundation. Harden volunteered
to lead community campaigns for the Brown County United Way and youth,
health, symphony and museum organizations, and he served on the seven-member
Executive Committee of the Green Bay Packers.
In accepting the award, Harden credited talented colleagues
and community generosity for helping move the campus forward..

“When I graduated from UW-Green Bay (with a double major in
political science and public administration), my two sons had already graduated
before me... from what was then the UWGB pre-school. They went on to become
ball boys for Phoenix men’s basketball during the Dick and Tony Bennett
era. Yes... we were then, and remain today, proud alums.”
Mary Quinnette Cuene ‘88, sharing fond memories of her campus years
in a greeting to graduating seniors at December commencement. A faculty
member at NWTC, she is president of the Wisconsin Technical College System
Board and a member of the UW System Board of Regents.

Happy 40th!
UW-Green
Bay’s first 40-year member of the faculty was among those honored
on campus last month. William Laatsch, professor of Urban and Regional Studies,
(shown here carrying the ceremonial commencement mace, by virtue of seniority)
joined the faculty of a UW-Green Bay forerunner, the two-year Fox Valley
campus, in 1966. He says he still gets excited before every lecture, and
when he doesn’t, “it’s time to call it quits.”
