Phuture Phoenix
As many of you know, the Phuture Phoenix Program encourages youngsters from at-risk schools to graduate from high school, dream of attending college and then turn those dreams into reality.
The first of our two Phuture Phoenix Days this year coincided with Higher Education Day in Wisconsin on Tuesday, Oct. 9. I thought Phuture Phoenix already had received all the possible accolades it could. But Wisconsin Secretary of State Doug La Follette came to campus to heap praise on the program and to say he wishes every campus in Wisconsin had something similar.
While my wife, Cyndie, who serves as Phuture Phoenix director, appreciates the awards and compliments, nothing is as rewarding as the smiling faces and energetic responses of the students and the successes the program already is producing. And it is support from across the campus and throughout the community that provides the foundation on which the success of Phuture Phoenix is built.

Chancellor’s Scholarship Dinner
About 200 friends joined Cyndie and me and the Council of Trustees Friday, Oct. 5 for this annual dinner to support scholarships for UW-Green Bay students. Year in and year out, this event serves as another reminder of how much our community supports the University and our students.
The theme for this year’s dinner was “Phoenix Rising.” And, quite frankly, that theme also sounds appropriate for the entire month at UW-Green Bay.

Northeast Wisconsin Learning Center
On Monday, Oct. 22, many of us from UW-Green Bay joined our friends and partners from UW-Oshkosh, UW-Fox Valley, Fox Valley Technical College and others from across the region to dedicate the new University of Wisconsin Northeast Wisconsin Learning Center. This innovative center, located on the FVTC campus in Appleton, primarily will serve Fox Cities residents through the adult-focused degree programs at UW-Green Bay and UW-Oshkosh.

The NEW Learning Center is only the latest example of how people and communities throughout Northeast Wisconsin have broken through outdated barriers and mindsets that were getting in the way of regional collaboration and cooperation.
I wish all of you could have been there not only to see this partnership in action, but to hear one area legislator repudiate the message of the naysayers and say, simply, “Job well done.”
As chancellor, I understand that every month is special at Green Bay’s University of Wisconsin. Work that is done, often quietly, in classrooms and laboratories, on stages and playing courts, makes this place truly remarkable.
But this month we celebrate the achievements, the support, the teamwork and the sense of community that make everything else possible.
I’d like to close by borrowing from our good friend in the Legislature. To all of you, job well done.
