Chancellor's FYI, October 2007
Vertical line for layout purposes only. I see partnerships with other educational institutions, whether they be local school districts, two- or four-year UW campuses or the technical colleges. In fact, a regional educational alliance called the Northeast Wisconsin Educational Resource Alliance, or NEW ERA, continues to break down outdated barriers to higher education while also serving as a model for the groundbreaking New North consortium.
We and our New North partners understand that Northeastern Wisconsin is a region in transition – economically and demographically. And we understand that we will successfully make this transition only through a regional approach. This once-novel idea now is accepted throughout all levels of government and by both the public and private sectors.
I see strong partnerships with communities of color as we work together to raise the aspirations of young people and then provide them with the tools they need to achieve their dreams.
A shining example is Phuture Phoenix, which continues to grow and receive accolades from across the state and nation. Phuture Phoenix is helping create the future for hundreds of youngsters whose moms and dads never had similar opportunities.
Vertical line for I see our faculty and staff building and strengthening partnerships with the business community, local governments and nonprofit organizations, mutually benefiting everyone involved.
I see the University – again, led by our enterprising faculty and staff – responding to community needs through innovative new programs such as the Bachelor of Applied Studies degree program and the First Nations Studies major. These programs build on our strong academic foundation and emphasize our unique approach of connecting learning to life.
I see UW-Green Bay connecting in new ways with our alumni who are so important in linking the University’s past, present and future.
I see partnerships that reach to the other side of the globe, connecting students to different cultures and increasing understanding across geographic boundaries.
I see our Phoenix Athletics program drawing support throughout the region, not only through attendance at athletics events but through unprecedented support of the Phoenix Fund, the fund-raising arm of the intercollegiate athletics program. Our student-athletes have responded through a commitment to their education and countless hours of service to the community.

I see our community partners and supporters stepping forward and helping us develop and then promote our regional Growth Agenda. A sense of community ownership continues to be crucial as the Growth Agenda moves through the final phases of the political and legislative process.
And, perhaps most importantly, I see so many people on our campus and in our community asking, “Who can help, and how can WE help?” This state of mind, this commitment to working together in pursuit of what’s best for all of us must become automatic as we tackle the many daunting challenges ahead.
As we dedicate the Kress Events Center in the weeks ahead, we celebrate these partnerships, these collaborative approaches and this shared feeling that we must work together to get where we need to go.
We did it with the Kress Events Center. And we will continue to do it as we successfully build “The Next UWGB.”
Enjoy the events of the coming weeks. You all had a hand in making this dream come true.
For this and for all you do to help your University “connect learning to life,” I offer my heartfelt thanks.

Bruce Shepard
