‘The Next UWGB’

Greetings from Northeastern Wisconsin’s University of Wisconsin!
As we move into October, one of the most beautiful months on our campus and in our state, we also move into a special time for your University. It’s a time for which we have waited since even before I arrived in Green Bay six years ago.
This month, we dedicate the much-needed, state-of-the-art Kress Events Center. I can barely scratch the surface of the excitement felt on campus about this new athletic, events and recreation center.
Elsewhere in this month’s edition of Chancellor’s FYI you will read about the lineup of dedication events planned over the next six weeks. I can’t wait for the celebration to begin.
The fitness center portion of the facility has been open for use since the start of the semester. I have to admit that I already have become a fixture at the center, joining hundreds of our students as well as faculty, staff and community members who are taking advantage of the outstanding new health, fitness and recreational offerings.
Sharing in the marvelous opportunities our students now have, I even have ventured up the three-story climbing wall and have challenged our student government president to a race to the top. (When I told my assistant of these intentions, she immediately called Cyndie and advised her to up my life-insurance coverage.)
Looking at this spectacular addition to the campus landscape, I see much more than the bricks, mortar, steel, glass and other materials that make up the physical structure. What I think of, above all else, is the commitment and partnership that made it possible.
Our students, of course, took the lead. They told us this was their highest priority for the campus, and they were willing to put up what essentially was the lead gift for the project.
Then our community friends and elected officials stepped up to the plate and helped finish the job. Their foresight and generosity will enhance the student experience at UW-Green Bay for years, even decades, to come.

At long last, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has a first-class, student-oriented facility large enough for all-campus events including commencement, orientation, women’s basketball and volleyball, Student Life concerts, festivals, and more. We’ll cut the ribbon on our new home floor Saturday afternoon, Nov. 3. Plan to join us for the Grand Opening and Open House!

This partnership of students, the community and the state of Wisconsin also sets the standard for the types of partnerships that bode well for the University’s future, and are crucial to building what I call “The Next UWGB.”
In my remarks at our opening Convocation this year, I mentioned that partnerships are central to almost everything we will try as we build a great university for the 21st century. As I detailed progress made during the past year in building “The Next UWGB,” I was delighted by the fact that almost every example involved partnerships.
When I became your chancellor, I knew that a campus that pulled up the drawbridges and tried to go about its business without community involvement and support would not succeed. I often repeated the phrase “communities support universities that support communities.”
The Kress Events Center, and all that went into making it a reality, is one major piece of evidence in support of the phrase. It shows that our University, our community and our state share a feeling that we all are in this together.
I see so many more examples as I look across the campus, community, region and beyond. These partnerships not only help us better serve a rapidly diversifying region, but help us do so through the efficient use of resources.
I see campus-community-alumni connections leading to the continuing success of UW-Green Bay’s Capital Campaign, even after the completion of its Kress Center phase. With its focus now firmly on academic enhancements, the campaign has exceeded $20 million and, in the past year alone, has led to the creation of 23 new endowed scholarships. I look forward to sharing news of additional academic successes in the near future.

                                                        . . . continued
