What's in a name? The Kress legacy

The naming of the Kress Events Center celebrates one of Green Bay’s first families of philanthropy.
In 2005, a multi-million-dollar gift by the Kress Family and the George Kress Foundation gave momentum to private fundraising and helped turn a dream into reality.
The Kresses are renowned far and wide for such generosity. Additional facilities bearing the family name include hospital care centers, a research facility at UW-Madison, the Kress Inn at St. Norbert College and the Kress Family Branch of the Brown County Library.
That civic spirit traces to family patriarch George F. Kress (1903-1997) who, in 1926, founded the company that would become Green Bay Packaging on a site not far from what today is UW-Green Bay. His legacy was carried forward by son James F. Kress, and into the 21st century by grandsons Will, the business-side CEO; John, president of the family foundation; and their families.

Student support key; project has roots in 1970s Sports Center
How the Kress Events Center became the largest building project in campus history is a story that begins in the early 1970s with construction of the original Phoenix Sports Center.
Downsized by state budget cuts, the PSC was barely adequate for that era’s much smaller student population and athletics array.
As early as the mid-1990s, UW-Green Bay student leaders were making the case for new facilities befitting their school’s status as a highly regarded regional university. Priorities included better recreation and fitness space, a more suitable home for Division I athletics and a venue large enough for commencement, orientation and other all-campus events.
In April 2000 the Student Senate voted to commit additional student fees over a 20-year period to support the phoenix-like rebirth of the PSC. University officials were able to secure a state pledge of $7.5 million. Private fundraising was the final piece of the puzzle, yielding $11 million in donations.
