| Click here to download a PDF of this issue of FYI Great people make for a great Commencement: On Dec. 20 we showcase Green Bay's finest Season’s greetings from the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay! Judy joins me in extending greetings to you and your families. We look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming holiday events on campus and in the community. This is an exciting time to be part of the UW-Green Bay community. Of course, with final exams approaching, our students may think it’s a bit too exciting. We are only a few weeks from one of the happiest and most important events of this and any academic year: Commencement. Our Fall Commencement this year is Saturday, Dec. 20 at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts, and nearly 300 graduates will mark the successful conclusion to their undergraduate and graduate studies. At Commencement, we mark the importance of the day through time-honored ritual and tradition. But we also celebrate the achievements of our students, achievements that carry so much meaning for our students, their families and their communities. These accomplishments are especially meaningful to our many “first-generation” students — those who are the first members of their families to graduate from college. When they walk across the Weidner Center stage to receive their diplomas, many of our graduates will conclude college careers marked by determination and perseverance. About 40 percent started their pursuit of a higher education elsewhere, and many have balanced their studies with the demands of work and family. In addition to celebrating the academic achievements of our students, this Commencement will be special for many other reasons. Here are just a few: — Our graduates will hear words of encouragement and inspiration from Commencement speaker Laura Hollingsworth, a UW-Green Bay alumna and president and publisher of the Des Moines Register, one of the nation’s most distinguished newspapers. The selection of Ms. Hollingsworth, Class of ’89, to speak at Commencement continues a recent and laudatory practice of having accomplished alumni serve as Commencement speakers. These speakers inspire our graduates not only through their words but through their records of personal and professional achievement. And any measurement of their success must include their selfless contributions to the quality of life of their communities and our country. — We will award named professorships to five esteemed UW-Green Bay faculty members. These professorships, made possible by the generosity of special friends and supporters of UW-Green Bay, support the scholarly work of outstanding faculty and help create a margin of excellence for a university long known as an innovator in higher education. The named professorships to be awarded at Commencement are the Austin E. Cofrin Professorship in Management, which will be awarded to Prof. John Stoll; the Patricia Wood Baer Professorship in Education, awarded to Prof. Cliff Abbott; the Frederick E. Baer Professorship in Business, awarded to Prof. Meir Russ; the Herbert Fisk Johnson Professorship in Environmental Studies, awarded to Prof. Denise Scheberle; and the Philip J. and Elizabeth G. Hendrickson Professorship in Business, awarded to Prof. Phil Clampitt. |
![]() Judy and I were delighted to host the annual Chancellor’s Scholarship Reception earlier this fall. We look forward to seeing many of you on campus at various holiday gatherings. Not sure, however, that you’ll see my tuxedo again: Most of these December events will be wonderfully informal.. — We will celebrate the University’s ties to our community and region. We will do so in large part through the awarding of the Chancellor’s Award to a community member of distinction. I am proud that retired Green Bay Packers president and chief executive officer Bob Harlan will accept the Chancellor’s Award this year. Our community and state owe Mr. Harlan a debt of gratitude for his leadership of the Packers and commitment to making this a great place to live. At UW-Green Bay we are especially grateful to him for stepping forward at a crucial time and serving as the first chairperson of the Phoenix Fund, which provides philanthropic support to UW-Green Bay Phoenix athletics. Commencement is an event at which we celebrate what a vital institution UW-Green Bay is for our region and state. Even at such a high-profile event, we can only touch the surface of what makes this University special and how it connects learning to life. So much of the University’s work — the work that takes place day in and day out all across campus in classrooms and laboratories — may get little notice at any of our big public events. But it does not go unnoticed by students who can open many doors of opportunity thanks to their college education. To our graduates who will cross the stage at the Weidner Center on Dec. 20, I offer my congratulations on a job well done. I also offer my sincere thanks to everyone on campus and in the community who — through your time, treasure, advice and mentoring — extended a helping hand to our graduates along the way. |
