Rule for layout purposes only.   Environmental awareness/sustainability
As you know, UW-Green has been a national leader on the environment and sustainability since the University’s earliest days. Our graduates are in positions of leadership on these issues throughout the country.
It makes more sense than ever for us to build on our commitment to environmental awareness and action. We have strong graduate and undergraduate programs in environmental science and policy. These programs are led by nationally and internationally recognized faculty. Our Cofrin Center for Biodiversity is an outstanding resource for our students and community.
We also have the advantage of a tremendous “laboratory” in our own backyard: our arboretum and natural areas, our location on the edge of the world’s most significant fresh water resource, and our region’s manufacturing sector leading in environmentally sound processes.
Already, I have begun discussions with senior and retired faculty about ways in which we can take the strong programs they built to an even higher level. Other members of the campus community will be brought into that discussion soon.

Internationalizing the campus
This one really gets my juices flowing. I have said numerous times that we cannot truly be Green Bay’s University of Wisconsin if we are not doing every¬thing we can to bring Green Bay to the world and the world to Green Bay.
So many of our faculty and staff are taking advantage of existing international opportunities and are seeking out new ones. Our efforts to internationalize the campus, curriculum and student experience have been expanding each year.
Now it’s time to think boldly about what we can do next. I like the idea of requiring a significant international experience in order to receive tenure at UW-Green Bay. Such a requirement would send a clear message to faculty and students about just how important a component of academic excellence we consider international experience to be.
I always have felt the best way I can lead this university is by asking the right questions. It is then up to the talented members of our campus community to come up with the answers.

Let's follow the example of those visionaries who built Green Bay's University four decades ago. They weren't afraid to take risks. We shouldn't be either.

As we work together to grow academic excellence at UW-Green Bay, I am trying to ask appropriate questions and nudge the University in certain directions. I am confident many great ideas will come forth from all across our campus. I encourage our community to think big — and not be afraid to fail.
And let’s not only think big, but think big picture. Narrow agendas and turf battles will get us nowhere. As we grow academic excellence in select areas, the entire institution and campus community will benefit.
When I think of examples of what I’m hoping for, I need to look no further than our university’s foundations. Let’s follow the example of those visionaries who built Green Bay’s University four decades ago. They weren’t afraid to take risks. We shouldn’t be, either.
It’s an exciting time to be at UW-Green bay, a time when we can dream big and then get to work at making those dreams come true.
Thanks again to all of you on campus and in our community for helping us connect learning to life. I look forward to working with you as we develop our blueprint for future success.
