“UW-Green Bay is a dynamic part of the educational community in Wisconsin. The campus and its graduates contribute not only to K-12 education, but they have also had an enormous positive impact on our economy and have led the way in collaborating with the Wisconsin Technical College System. I appreciate UWGB more and more each day.”

Hall of Fame players

Longtime Phoenix fans still recall March 1991 and the wildly jubilant scene at the Brown County Arena on the night John Martinez climbed up to cut down the nets on what was then the program’s biggest victory. His team had just whipped Northern Illinois in the conference finals to advance for the first time to the “Big Dance.”
Martinez, Class of 1994, will return to campus this month to accept induction into the Phoenix Hall of Fame. He will be joined by fellow inductee Julie Steeno, a 1982 grad and star of the first women’s basketball team to make a national tourney run. The induction banquet is Friday, Feb. 29. Betty Rose Meyer remembered as friend to students
Photo: Betty Rose Meyer. With the passing Jan. 15 of longtime Founders association member Mrs. Robert T. Meyer — Betty Rose Meyer — UW-Green Bay and its students lost a friend of the highest order.
Mrs. Meyer was well-known locally for her philanthropic support of the Meyer Theatre restoration, and she also contributed to campus projects including the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts and the Kress Events Center. She is perhaps remembered most fondly here, however, for a major gift in 1997 for student scholarships. At the time, it was the largest such gift in campus history, and she made clear that it should benefit everyday families from Northeastern Wisconsin.
“I want these awards to be given to the ambitious and dedicated, but average student who, because of family financial situations, may not be able to continue his or her education,” Mrs. Meyer said.
The fund was included in her family’s suggestions for memorials in her honor. Gifts to the Robert T. and Betty Rose Meyer Scholarship Fund continue to be received.

One of the world’s leading authorities on revolutionary firebrand Thomas Paine — UW-Green Bay Prof. Harvey Kaye — made a national television ap¬pearance in January on the PBS program “Bill Moyers’ Journal.”
The host is a fan of Kaye and his highly acclaimed book Thomas Paine and the Promise of America. “Harvey, I have never met a historian more enthusiastic about his subject than you are about Thomas Paine,” Moyers said in opening the interview.
The two had an animated discussion of Paine’s relevance today, and how 20th century leaders from FDR to Reagan have echoed the Colonial era patriot’s confidence in the working class and America’s great experiment with democratic rule.
