Chancellor's FYI, January 2008.
  PHoto: Emily Krambs at podium at commencement. “Graduates… We’ll always remember the autumn walks in the Arboretum, cheering the Phoenix to victory, late nights studying at the Library when dinner consisted of items out of the vending machines… We’ve come a long way from our freshman year, and getting lost in the tunnels…”
Emily Krambs, graduating senior and class speaker, who also reminisced that having great professors “who remembered your name in the classroom” was a favorite UW-Green Bay memory

Commencement brings highest
community honors for Kuehnes, Olson

Photo: Provost Hammersmith, Jerry Olson and Chancellor Shepard at podium at commencement.Receiving Chancellor’s Awards for distinguished service to UW-Green Bay at December commencement were community leaders Carl and Mary Ellen Kuehne and former Dean of Students Gerald H. Olson.
      Olson, shown at left with Provost Sue K. Hammersmith and Chancellor Bruce Shepard during the ceremony, was dean of students from 1975 through 1996. He guided development of student life facilities and services still effective today in areas of housing, counseling, campus life, conduct, recruitment, admissions and financial aid.Photo: Carl and Mary Ellen Kuehne.
      Carl and Mary Ellen Kuehne posed for this photo (right) on the Weidner Center’s grand staircase.
      The Kuehnes have been generous supporters of UW-Green Bay, from the original seat-donor campaign for the Weidner Center to a recent naming-rights gift to the new Kress Events Center. They have directed additional philanthropy toward the chancellor’s scholarship fund, intercollegiate athletics and the Phuture Phoenix program. Carl, co-chairman and co-CEO of American Foods Group LLC, has been an influential advocate for University growth as a member of the Chancellor’s Council of Trustees.

stressing campus safety,
emergency preparedness

Within hours of the Virginia Tech shootings last April, UW-Green Bay began reviewing its safety procedures and policies.
      “When it comes to ensuring a safe campus, we have had many sensible practices in place for years,” Chancellor Bruce Shepard says. “However, the Virginia Tech tragedy showed that we must be attentive and open to new ideas.”
      Shepard immersed himself in the larger topic when Gov. Jim Doyle appointed him co-chair of Wisconsin’s task force on campus safety. The Chancellor and task force colleagues spent much of 2007 in consultation on best practices across the country.
      Some of their findings will be discussed in February, when the UW System’s new campus-by-campus security report is brought up for public review by the UW Board of Regents. On the Green Bay campus, the report details activities initiated since the Virginia Tech tragedy, including:
    • a review of UW-Green Bay’s emergency response practices and procedures;
    • an “active shooter” training exercise involving campus, city and county police;
    • information sessions on campus safety at each new freshman parent orientation;
    • distribution to all students, faculty and staff information about protocols and procedures dealing with potential violent behavior;
    • promotion of a depression screening awareness campaign.

Chancellor pours
heart into it, for finals

Chancellor Bruce Shepard helped the UW-Green Bay community energize for finals week on Dec. 17. He served up lattes made with his home-roasted coffee beans to faculty, staff and early-rising students at the campus Common Grounds coffee shop. The lattes were compliments of the Chancellor; donations were forwarded to Paul’s Pantry.
