Chancellor's FYI, November 2008

There were numerous other opportunities for our campus and community to experience and participate in our political process. The campus hosted informative debates and forums involving candidates for Congress and the state Legislature. The candidate visits not only gave us an opportunity to hear the candidates’ views but to remind them of the importance of higher education and our Growth Agenda to the future success of the New North region.

I applaud and congratulate our students, faculty and staff who organized these campaign events and did their best to make sure we have an informed electorate Nov. 4. With a polling station on campus again this year, I am confident that turnout from student voters will be close to an all-time high.

And, as the election approaches, it’s nice to consider the success of UW-Green Bay alumni in public service and politics. Alumni like state Sen. Robert Cowles, Sen. Dave Hansen and Rep. Frank Lasee continue to be well-connected to their alma mater.

Our current issue of Inside UW-Green Bay magazine highlights others whose profiles may not be as high as those of longtime elected officials, but who play an important role in shaping legislation and public policy.

Two “insiders” at the state Capitol are alums Jamie Kuhn and Tim Casper. A little over a decade ago, Kuhn and Casper were the leaders of UW-Green Bay’s Student Government Association. Today, Kuhn is the top aide to state Sen. Mark Miller, and Casper is policy director for Gov. Jim Doyle. In the Inside article, they talk about how their experiences in and out of the classroom at UW-Green Bay influenced their career paths.

So whether it’s through Phuture Phoenix, election activities, or the crucial day-to-day learning that takes place in classrooms all across campus, October was a special month. It provided many opportunities for connecting learning to life and showcased the distinct role UW-Green Bay has in the New North region and the state of Wisconsin.

Thanks for all you contribute to these activities and for helping UW-Green Bay, our students and our region achieve their full potential. David Ward
