“It was a time of protest, and there was a school of thought that college theatre should be stretching limits, pushing the envelope. I thought we should do provocative works here, too.”

Crowd mobs the basketball floor at the Resch Center following the Phoenix men's win over Butler.Celebrating a highly rated win
Students stormed the floor after the UW-Green Bay men’s basketball team beat the Butler Bulldogs Monday night at the Resch Center, and why not?

With the victory before a season-high crowd of 7,000 fans, the Phoenix moved to 18-6 overall and into contention for first place in the Horizon League. Butler came in 19-1, unbeaten in conference and ranked No. 11 in the nation. UW-Green Bay picked up its third victory in the program’s history against ranked opponents and the first since 1998, and Butler became the highest-ranked victim.

The Phoenix men are next in action Saturday night (Feb. 7) with an Alumni Night matchup against archrival Milwaukee before what should be another near-capacity crowd.

A night to remember for UW-Green Bay jazz
For local jazz fans, last Saturday’s 39th Jazz Fest concert at the Weidner Center was a concert for the ages. More than 50 all-star alumni musicians from across the country returned for a tribute to retired music professor Lovell Ives, who founded the festival and UW-Green Bay’s jazz program. Many of the alumni now perform professionally. Ives returned to familiar territory when he directed a big-band set during the concert. Among the featured soloists was Green Bay music educator and clarinetist Kevin Van Ess, Class of ’84, who brought the house down with “Closer Walk With Thee.” At a reception afterward, drummer Carl Allen of New York City captures an Ives family shot for his photo album. Lovell Ives celebrated his 80th birthday last year.

Library mini-golf is above-par event
You. In the library. With a putter.
It’s not some crazy game of Clue. It’s a unique fundraiser dubbed “Caddy Stacks,” or a night of miniature golf in the Cofrin Library at UW-Green Bay.
The event is scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13. The No. 1 tee box will be located just inside the plaza entrance on the second floor of the library. If your first tee shot carries (into the elevator), you’ll be putting for par on the seventh floor. From there, the 18-hole layout hops around from floor to floor, collection to collection, with theme holes highlighting various parts of the library’s collection. The Washington Monument hole, for example, is located in the government documents area, naturally.
“This is a fundraiser, but it’s also a nice way to show off the range of the library’s collections,” says Prof. David Voelker, who is president of the Friends of the Cofrin Library board. “It’s a great way to have fun. All we ask is that players stick to putting. No driving!”
The course is open to people of all ages and abilities… students, staff, faculty and members of the general public… greens fees are $5 per person. Proceeds will benefit collections and services of the Cofrin Library.
