Jon Delaney.“First, music is a form of mental gymnastics that strengthens the brain.
Second, music offers middle- and high-school students (who are incredibly self-conscious)
a chance to be creative and individualistic in a safe environment. Third, music offers
a ‘complete education’ on its own…”

— Freedom School District teacher and music-education advocate Jon Delany.
The 1998 UW-Green Bay grad formerly taught college students as an ad hoc instructor and director of the Phoenix Pep Band. Delany describes his work in a bonus online feature from the February
music-and-fine-arts edition of the Inside alumni magazine at www.uwgb.edu/inside/fyi/delany/
mailed this week.

Women's basketball team with Hinckley.Team raises $21,000 for cancer research, Hinckley haircut

The UW-Green Bay women’s basketball team raised more than $21,000 for cancer research, surpassing Dr. Jim Hinckley’s goal of $7,500 — his price to shave both his head and beard. After the Loyola game last Saturday, Hinckley, the team’s longtime physician, sat for a midcourt haircut by members of the team. The women also wore pink jerseys during the “Pink Zone” game to raise breast cancer awareness.

Juliet Cole accepting award at podium.Cole earns Leadership Green Bay's highest honor

Juliet Cole was the recipient last month of the 2009 Leo Frigo Leadership Award, given to a program volunteer or alumnus of the Leadership Green Bay organization who has been a model of community leadership. Cole is the associate director of the Institute for Learning Partnership at UW-Green Bay where she also teaches multicultural education and leads diversity efforts throughout the region. Her role, and that of the Institute, is to provide improved learning through improved teaching and awareness. The award recognized Cole for her decades of commitment to the community, particularly with diversity. The awards program took place at the Lambeau Field atrium.

University Style Guide lays down the law on green vs. red, use of 'UWGB,' logo variations

Any large, successful organization has rules regarding its image, use of its name and logos.

University wordmark.UW-Green Bay is no exception. A new update of the University Style Guide — now published on the web — offers few major changes but does clarify and reinforce a few basic principles.

Alumni and friends of the University might be interested to know, for instance, that:

Phoenix emblem.• “Red” is out. Formerly a design mainstay in the 1970s when the institution was a fresh offshoot of the Madison campus, red has gradually faded in favor of a proud forest green. Green and white are today’s University colors, with a touch of red entirely optional and not, in fact, recommended.

• Use of the label “UWGB” should be limited to the most local audiences or for a throwback connotation, say, with 1970s alumni who recall when that acronym was the school’s primary logo. UW-Green Bay or the full name are today’s preference.

Athletics insignia.• Logo and emblem usage has tightened up. UW-Green Bay now retains the services of a national firm to administer its licensing program and monitor commercial usage. There are also specific rules governing when the Wordmark, the stand-alone Phoenix Emblem, and the Athletics Insignia (sports use only) may be used. (Gone are the days when campus groups could sketch their own mythical phoenix for their club or activity — or pull out a vintage drawing.)
