What we're saying about ourselves
Community audiences are getting a feel for UW-Green Bay's new leadership. The chancellor, officers and athletics director have been in-demand guest speakers, proudly referring to a set list of positives when they update listeners on the campus, and its progress. The list includes:
   - Record enrollment demand
   - Freshmen have record gpa
   - Women's basketball is No. 1 in nation for academics
   - Mary Ann Cofrin Hall: a new era for campus
   - Lab Sciences remodeling
   - Dedication to education
   - Grads help economy: 90%+ stay in-state

Daffodil Days signal spring and new life
UW-Green Bay staff members are on pace to surpass last year's total of $1,500 in the fight against cancer through the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days sale. The University was second in sales last year only to American Medical Security. The Classified Administrative Support Committee leads the charge.

Where students stand on today's great issues
UW-Green Bay's Student Life Office runs a fun and clearly unscientific online poll at www.uwgb.edu/stulife/hot-news. February's question: "The best guitarist of all time?" Latest results:
   - Eddie Van Halen 42%
   - Jimi Hendrix 37%
   - Eric Clapton 21%

New housing starts
When the skiers are away, the contractors play. The mild winter has construction of the new on-campus housing unit more than one month ahead of schedule. The building should be completed by mid-July. The unit is likely to be UW-Green Bay's choicest housing, located close to academic buildings and the Union (between the apartments and the Studio Arts Building), and near the golf course. The building will house two- and four-bedroom suites and feature a "Living Learning Center" (a casual classroom space). The 122-bed unit is the first of three targeted for completion by fall of 2004 that will boost the on-campus population to nearly 2,000.

What they're saying about us
Local newspapers have praised UW-Green Bay for making it absolutely clear the school does not intend the expanded Phoenix Sports Center to be in competition with the community's new 10,000-seat Resch Center arena. Commenting on Chancellor Bruce Shepard's proposal for a badly needed but more suitably scaled students sports and events center (in the 3,000 to 4,000-seat range) to enhance campus life, the Green Bay News-Chronicle editorialized "Shepard's comments come as a breath of fresh air." The Green Bay Press-Gazette advised that "community leaders should hop on board and help work to make that project a reality."

Retiree/students celebrate 10th anniversary with growth, more learning

The University's Learning in Retirement program is 550 members strong this spring with 455 retirees signed up for a record 41 classes and that's up from 88 members at the program's inception ten years ago. LIR serves retirees with non-credit courses geared to their interests and talents. UW-Green Bay's is one of the longest-running and best-attended LIR programs in the UW System and within the state of Wisconsin. Popular choices are The Presidency: One Year Later; Living with the Law; Spanish; Glacial Geography; Chicago; Flowers, Gardening; Bridge; and Explore Green Bay. Membership fees are currently $40 per year. For information, call 920-465-2356.

"I think it's great that UWGB has such supportive graduate programs. . . The recognition is nice. It has helped me to realize my own potential, and has made my family and me very glad that I chose UWGB for my graduate education."
