Office of the Chancellor
Chancellor's FYI March 2004 Greetings continued
black line for border We announced the Space Grant Consortium has earned an additional $100,000 from NASA to continue student-designed satellite projects and expand into rocket engineering competitions. The intent is to grow Wisconsin’s pipeline of outstanding math and science students interested in aerospace careers.

Green Bay lands tourney
When UW-Green Bay moved up to NCAA Division I a quarter century ago, the promise was made that Phoenix Athletics would bring the highest level of collegiate sports home to a community already famous for professional football. That promise was kept, most visibly with our men’s and women’s basketball teams and academic all-Americans across the program. The latest milestone is being chosen one of four regional sites for the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament this December. This is a first for Green Bay, a positive for the local hospitality industry and a treat for fans who will see four of the nation’s top volleyball teams in action at the Resch. As host institution we are grateful to PMI and Packer Country Regional Tourism for helping land this national event.

More campaign reflections
All these examples offer evidence of our success in, as you have heard me say before, turning the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay into Green Bay’s University of Wisconsin. I really think, referring again to the campaign stops and stealing columnist Tom Perry’s phrase, it was our region that hit the “grand slam.” It’s great that those operating from a national stage immediately recognize what may not always be so clear elsewhere in our state: Northeastern Wisconsin is a critically important region. Having the nominees here for the general election would amplify that importance and our emphasis on connecting learning to life and campus to community. Unfortunately, we do not yet have a facility suitable for such events. But, that need is a topic for a future “FYI.”

Thank you, President Lyall
I always have felt UW-Green Bay was Katharine Lyall’s favorite campus. All the other chancellors probably say similar things about their own institutions, of course, but in our case I have no doubt. President Lyall has been very supportive of me, personally, and she has been a stalwart friend of UWGB, its special mission and our current strategic direction of enrollment growth and regional service. When she announced last month her intention to retire as UW System president, I was saddened by the news but thankful for the opportunity to have been part of a system led by one of America’s truly preeminent academic leaders. On behalf of UWGB, I extend a public ‘thank-you” to Dr. Katharine Lyall for her distinguished service to public higher education in Wisconsin.

As I have shared with the campus community, UWGB’s future is independent of particular individuals, that bright future resting as it does on the irresistable force of our current direction. The University of Wisconsin remains one of America’s strongest systems and its presidency will attract talented candidates both internal and external. I encourage friends of UWGB to join me in following closely the Regents’ search process and offering counsel as appropriate.

Quick hitters

Wrapping up, I’ll note briefly:
• We are getting a record response to the Alumni Phone-a-Thon and Craig Mueller’s generous offer of a dollar-for-dollar match.
• The Feb. 14 cutoff date for new-freshman applications was the best of times and the worst of times. Popularity is gratifying — only Madison closed earlier — but there is pain in lacking capacity to fully serve our state and region.
• Pakistani educators arrive this week. Helping, in some small way, to improve public schools in that region of the world is a tremendous endeavor.
• The women’s basketball team will host at least one Horizon League tournament game, a quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at the PSC.
• This week’s itinerary for the Phoenix men is undetermined, as of this writing, but what an impressive season! They have been a joy to watch.
• Also a joy: students on stage at the Weidner. Our award-winning choral and theatre ensembles perform this weekend. Check the calendar.
• Great press for our accounting students volunteering for the VITA tax-preparation service!
It’s one of UWGB’s oldest and best outreach activities.
• Spring Break is days away. Increasingly, that means volunteer service or extra hours at work as much as it means a tropical vacation, but for all our students, it is well-deserved time away to recharge for the stretch drive. Enjoy!

That’s all for now. Next month we’ll talk about the currency of a liberal arts education and catalog a few of the outstanding research and problem-solving opportunities that make UWGB a special place. Until then...

Thank you for helping us connect learning to life,

Bruce Shepard
