Sporting event? No. Poetry slam!

Enthusiastic, placard-waving poetry lovers packed the Neville Museum auditorium last month for the second annual “Poetry Read-Off.” Dozens of writing students from UW-Green Bay and St. Norbert College came together for the reading, which Humanistic Studies Prof. Rebecca Meacham described as “part collaborative, part competitive.” The atmosphere was only slightly less intense than at a hard-core poetry “slam” — where judges pull no punches and unlucky writers can be booed off the stage — but participants and audience members were into the action. Sharing their own work were UW-Green Bay’s Rod Zinkel, Dave Mueller, Julie Strand, Matthew Aliota, Sarah Rose Thomas and Kirsten Blair, and five SNC students. Who “won” the readoff? Hard to say, but signs are that UW-Green Bay and its Writers Union literary club had the best fan support.

Attracting campers by the busload

UW-Green Bay’s Summer Camp program is gearing up for even better service to a wider swath of Northeast Wisconsin. Bus service has been extended for the popular Middle School Band, Orchestra and Choral Camp, July 18-24. Bus routes for local commuter students (campers from outstate areas typically stay in the UW-Green Bay residence halls) will now include pickups at Pulaski Middle School and Southern Door Middle School, in addition to Green Bay and De Pere routes. The expanding middle-school music camp is just one of many options; the summer lineup of art, music, science, language and business camps includes sessions for pre-schoolers through high school seniors. If it’s May... June and Bayfest are on the way

Another fireworks extravaganza, more and bigger kite-flying adventures (with lighted models for evening use), and an opening-night concert by the 1970s rock group America are among the highlights of Bayfest 2004. The annual fund-raiser for Phoenix Athletics scholarships is billed as the summer’s largest food and music festival north of Milwaukee’s Summerfest. Bayfest runs June 10-14 on the campus grounds along the main entrance boulevard. Visit http://www.uwgb.edu/athletics/bayfest/.

We’ve got spirit, how ‘bout you?
The UW System is proud of its rich tradition and many contributions to the state and nation. You should be, too! Wear your colors on Friday, May 7. Join alumni, friends, and members of the university community for the first statewide “UW Spirit Day” — celebrating the contributions of more than one-half million Wisconsin citizens who are UW grads. On campus, all UW System graduates will be encouraged to wear the colors of their alma mater and gather for a “Celebrating UW” photo outside the Library. Phoenix Bookstore manager Pat Sorelle is chiming in on the fun with deep discounts for UW-Green Bay alumni. And Zaid Jazrawi, a 1990 UW-Green Bay graduate and owner of Oxford’s Cafe and Pub on Washington Street, downtown Green Bay, is hosting a “Pre-Spirit” reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6. All UW alumni and friends are welcome to attend.

“Publishing books, articles, reviews and essays is essential, and an important means for professors to stay current, active and involved. New ideas and approaches to subjects are identified, and this impacts and improves the way we teach. Publishing enhances connections with the public. It stimulates debate, fosters dialog, and often changes the community for the better.”

Prof. Andrew Kersten, history and Social Change and Development, author of “Race, Jobs and War” and “Politics and Progress: State and Society in America”
