"Cool": Freshman takes turn at UW-Green Bay helm
She wasn't able to change policy or proclaim an exam-free day, but student Jessica Shefchik still enjoyed her eight hours as UW-Green Bay chancellor.
Shefchik, a freshman from Green Bay, was the lucky winner of the "Chancellor for a Day" contest held as part of Inauguration Week activities on campus. She was recognized at the installation ceremony and had a chance to visit with UW System President Katharine Lyall.
Among her first "moves" as chancellor, she sat at Bruce Shepard's desk and waved to her mother and sister via the Chancellor's "web cam." She moved on to meetings with the Chancellor's Advisory Council on Equality for Women and the Chancellor's Community Council on Diversity.
Chancellor Shepard, by the way, enjoyed the student-authored activity. "I thought it was a great idea," said Shepard. "It demonstrated some important values we wanted emphasized in the inauguration week, connecting with students, access and having fun."
Shefchik, hoping to major in elementary education and become a classroom teacher someday, might consider the administrative side of education
"It was really cool," she said, excitedly. "I didn't realize how busy the Chancellor was or how many people he has contact with in a day. He showed me this huge manila folder, with all the stuff that helps him prepare for the day. I was only with him for a few hours but he was really busy."
"He left a really great impression on me, as someone who really listens and really cares. He's very personable, and I could tell that people respected him, too."
What would she have changed had she had the authority that goes with the position?
"Definitely change the textbook situation by putting a renting system in place," she said.

UW-Green Bay employees take aim at 100 percent
Full participation is the goal for the 2002 Employee Drive at UW-Green Bay. Last year's record appeal raised approximately $23,000 to support academic excellence on campus, with more than 100 employees increasing their gifts over their previous year's contribution. Delighted with last year's campaign, organizers are adding the additional emphasis on participation rates and encouraging first-time donors to join in with gifts of any size. The drive wraps up Oct. 15.

"Fox Cities Roadshow": Hop on board!
No, its not the popular PBS primetime series "Antiques Roadshow," but maybe it's a close second. UW-Green Bay is coming to the Fox Cities, Nov. 6, with a first-ever Fox Cities Alumni Reception. He's not Dan Elias, but UW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard will host the event and wow the audience wth his own treasures — UW-Green Bay programs, people and events.
The reception at UW-Fox Valley affords Valley residents a convenient opportunity to meet Shepard, and offers the 1,132 UW-Green Bay alumni residing in the Fox Cities a chance to reconnect with their alma mater.
The UW-Green Bay Alumni Association sponsors the free reception at the UW-Fox Valley Union. It begins with a 6 p.m. social hour with cash bar and hors d'oeuvres, followed by the Chancellor's program from 7 to 7:30 p.m.
Representatives of the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts, Career Services, Phoenix Athletics (got your Resch Center tickets?), master's degree programs — including the new Master's in Management — and many others, are joining in on the Fox Cities "road show."
"We want the people of the Fox Cities to get an up-to-date picture of all the exciting things that are happening at UW-Green Bay," Shepard says. "At the same time, we want to hear from them about their hopes nad expectations for the University."
For more information, about the Fox Cities reception, contact Shane Kohl, UW-Green Bay Director of Donor and Alumni Relations at (920) 465-2586 or kohls@uwgb.edu.

"It's an excellent place to work, with talented employees. Now, we are excited that we have leadership that recognizes that. . . and wants to make this an even better place, for everyone."
