Kress Center groundbreaking is Nov. 1
Campus
and community members are welcomed and encouraged to attend the groundbreaking
for the new Kress Events Center at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1, in front of
the Phoenix Sports Center.
Doing the honors will be members of the Kress family,
public officials, fundraising campaign co-chairs and University students
and administration. A reception will follow the brief ceremony.
The groundbreaking is the culmination of a combined
effort by private individuals and foundations, UW-Green Bay students and
the state of Wisconsin to raise $32.5 million for the project. The undersized,
bare-bones PSC opened in 1976 and has never been renovated or upgraded
to address fitness and recreation needs.
Plans for the Kress Events Center include a central
area with a seating capacity of 4,000 as the home court of the women’s
basketball and volleyball teams. The central area will also be home to
campus events such as summer orientation, commencement, student career
fairs, festivals, concerts and multicultural activities. UW-Green Bay
officials hope for occupancy by fall 2007.
Bayfest
decision prompts local talk of new summer festival
Shortly after the announcement last month of Bayfest’s discontinuation,
Amy Arndt, executive director of Celebrate De Pere, said she would resign
that job to spearhead efforts for a new festival called Fox River Fest.
The new event, she indicated, would also take place in June, starting
in 2006.
Bayfest was an annual event on the UW-Green Bay campus
and ranked among the area’s largest food and music festivals. It
served as a fundraiser for Phoenix Athletics, but declining receipts,
new revenue-generating options and other factors forced its end.
UW-Green Bay is not affiliated with Arndt’s plan,
Athletics Director Ken Bothof says. UW-Green Bay maintains rights to the
Bayfest name, and it is considered unlikely the University would rent
the grounds to others for a similar event.
Bothof acknowledged it will seem something is missing
when June 2006 rolls around.
“From a pure financial standpoint, it wasn’t
a difficult decision. From a tradition and history of Bayfest standpoint,
and because of the community involvement, it certainly made it more difficult,”
he told the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
By one estimate, the festival generated more than $2.5
million in scholarships for Phoenix Athletics since its founding in 1981.
Longtime director Tim Quigley retired earlier this year following the
25th edition.

Scholarships,
dinner and student all-stars
Guests filled the foyer at the fourth annual Chancellor’s Scholarship
Dinner held Sept. 23 at the Weidner Center. Rapidly rising as a signature
event for UW-Green Bay community relations, the evening raised thousands
of dollars for scholarships and drew attention to student achievement.
With a theme of “all-stars,” displays at the gathering highlighted
outstanding work on campus and beyond. (One poster, for example, starred
Dushani Corea-Dharmaratne and her coordination of local relief for tsunami
damage in her native Sri Lanka.) More than two dozen tables were sponsored
by community businesses and individuals. Co-hosted by the Chancellor’s
Council of Trustees, the evening was organized by an event committee of
Kevin Collins, Jeff Entwistle, Kay Ferguson, Susan Finco, Diane Ford,
Janet Lieb, Ginny Riopelle, Beth Schmidt, Cyndie Shepard and Ellen Weidner.
Visiting
Fulbright Scholar explores politics, gender, Islam
“Political Islam and Gender Democracy in the Arab World: The Case
of Jordan” is the topic of visiting Fulbright Scholar Dr. Ibtesam
Al-Atiyat in a presentation to campus and community at 4 p.m. Tuesday,
Oct. 18, in Phoenix Room A of the University Union. Al-Atiyat is in residence
through spring 2006 at UW-Green Bay.
Justice Symposium
eyes indigenous rights
Internationally known scholars will discuss the “many faces”
of indigenous rights and land claims at the third International Social
Justice Symposium Nov. 14-15. UW-Green Bay and St. Norbert College are
again partnering, collaborating with the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin on
the indigenous rights and land claims symposium. More information —
including times, location and registration material — is available
online at www.uwgb.edu/outreach/events/socialjustice.
