Next up for Lab Sciences: A reunion, of sorts, on Oct. 16
One of UW-Green Bay’s original buildings has been made new again, a reality that was celebrated in grand style with a ribbon cutting and re-dedication ceremony last month.
The newly expanded and totally renovated Laboratory Sciences Building was formally re-opened after a two-year, $15 million makeover. University officials say the facility — home to the Natural and Applied Sciences and Human Biology programs — will be a showplace for science education and an up-to-date training ground for new leaders in the natural sciences and health professions. The building originally opened in September 1969 as one of the first three buildings on campus, along with the Environmental Sciences and Instructional Services buildings.
The “new” Lab Sciences figures to be a centerpiece attraction when the UW-Green Bay Alumni Association hosts its annual AlumniFest weekend on Oct. 16. Plans are under way to invite science alums back to campus for LS tours and a chance to visit with current and former faculty members.

Founders Awards for Excellence
Dennis Nellis, pictured at work.“It blew me away. A total surprise. I had just come back from the conference in Colorado and (my supervisor) Mike Barry called me and then he and Vice Chancellor Tom Maki and the whole office staff came over and presented me with the plaque. The conference was great, but this was better…just a great honor.”
– Dennis Nellis honored in absentia at Fall Convocation as the Founders Award honoree for outstanding classified-staff service. The internal supply-and-delivery specialist was away at a national meeting, presenting on UW-Green Bay’s innovative surplus property program that has generated nearly $250,000 in revenue. Other recipients were David Dettman, Regan Gurung, Cheryl Grosso, Cristina Ortiz and Jan Thornton.

Fine-art chandelier sparkles for Weidner Center visitors
A photograph simply cannot do it justice. Only when the spotlights shine this week on the new Weidner Center Chandelier by world-renowned studio glass artist Dale Chihuly will the multi-colored, hand-blown glasswork be unveiled in all its glory. The official dedication comes the evening of Sept. 12 as the entertainment season kicks off with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. An informal daytime viewing—a “sneak peak”—is scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 9). The piece is a gift from family and friends honoring the late Josephine Buchanan Lenfestey.

1,001 new freshmen
For only the third time in its history, UW-Green Bay has a new-freshman class of more than 1,000: to be precise, 1,001. These four pose at the recent FOCUS back-to-school cookout at the University Union.

Photoblog

The newest addition to the University’s main Web page is a link to Photoblog, a photo-essay page capturing scenes of everyday life on the UW-Green Bay campus. This fall’s first posting features scenes from freshman move-in day. A photoblog is a visuals-intensive variation of an on-line diary or Web log, also known as a “blog.” Look for this particular photoblog to appear occasionally at www.uwgb.edu.
