A
few weeks ago at the sports center reception on campus to honor Mr. and
Mrs. (Bob and Carol) Bush, one of my friends during the game took note of
how many community members were in attendance. I couldn’t help but
agree that community support for UW-Green Bay has never been higher. Later
on after the ceremony, Mrs. Bush came up to me and said that the reason
she and her husband decided to donate such a generous amount was because
they were inspired by the students... I thanked Mrs. Bush for her comments
and explained that I felt the inspiration was circular... that the students
do one thing, it inspires the community, and then the community does another,
which inspires the students. I can’t tell you how amazed the students
are when people like them donate their energy, time and financial support
to our projects on campus. You all are truly an inspiration for all students
on campus… The expansion only works when students, community, administrators
and legislators come together to work for a common goal. You all
recognize that this sports center will benefit everyone, not just one group
of people. So, with that, on behalf of the students, I thank all (who have
helped ) to make this sports center expansion a reality.Jon Virant Student government president, Senior, Sheboygan (in remarks at a recent reception for events center supporters) I’ll
be a senior when the facility opens in 2007, so I’m really happy about
it. In a short time it would have become a critical need for the building
expansion. The racquetball court is crammed with fitness equipment because
there is no other place for it. I’m excited about the expanded space
and the new equipment. I work out three times a week, and I figure if our
student fees were going to increase, it might as well go for something the
students were going to use like this new facility. Kait Fitzgerald Freshman, Communication major, Green Bay |
I’ve
heard that the new Kress Center is going to be really nice. I am looking
forward to it, especially to having a larger team lockerroom, and facilities
comparable to other places we visit. One thing that has been nice about
the Phoenix Sport Center is that we’re a close-knit group of athletes
and the small facility allows us to meet the athletes from the other teams.
But the new facility with larger seating for home matches is going to be
great, and I’m sure it will help in recruiting efforts when we no
longer have to show prospects the outdated gym.Betty Slinger Freshman setter, women’s volleyball team, Faribault, Minn. I
was really impressed with the photos of the new student events center. I’m
looking forward to this new addition to campus. I think it will help the
general students have more opportunities to use the facility. More space
and newer equipment was the big thing. As a student and someone who loves this place, I accept that I’ve had to pay a little bit more in order to have this type of improvement. Chris Russell Sophomore, Social Change and Development major, La Crosse
I’m really
excited to have the opportunity to play in the new Kress Events Center.
Our team and the University really need this new facility. It will offer
so much more to so many people, not just the sports teams. As far as basketball, we jam the Phoenix Sports Center now. I can only imagine how loud the crowds will be with twice as many Phoenix fans in the stands. Kayla Groh Freshman guard, women’s basketball team, Elkhart Lake |

Our program is getting better — we’re an up-and-coming team — and the new building is just another step in that direction. We’re excited for the chance to work out and improve our game with better equipment in a new facility. It will almost be like a brand-new start for us. Ryan Evanochko Sophomore guard, men’s basketball team, Beaver Falls, Pa. |
