beyond the walls: Outreach and Adult Access models entrepreneurial spirit at UW-Green Bay Question: How do you increase your money ten-fold? Answer: Put it into programming that serves the region, anticipates the market and provides a UW-quality experience at an affordable price. That’s the investment model we follow in the Division of Outreach and Adult Access. Campus and community are enjoying the benefits. The people of our division (pictured above) leverage a relatively modest investment in taxpayer seed money into a hefty return in program revenue. The happy result for citizens of our region is access to a multi-million-dollar array of enrichment courses and expanded learning opportunities above and beyond UW-Green Bay’s superb bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. Our work is not always easy — more on this later — but it is always rewarding. It is rewarding because it is directly inspired by The Wisconsin Idea, which holds that “the boundaries of the University are the boundaries of the state.” A public university has an obligation to reach beyond the walls of the institution to improve people’s lives and make the world a better place. This philosophy has shaped the University of Wisconsin mission “to extend knowledge and its application beyond the boundaries of its campuses.” In Green Bay, the University’s robust commitment to serving our community started with our founding chancellor’s introduction of “communiversity,” and, more recently, Chancellor Bruce Shepard’s unqualified belief in the importance of “connecting learning to life.” As the chancellor likes to say, “Communities support universities that support communities.” |
