| Look first at Wisconsin. Some growth. Now consider Brown County. We grew at almost twice the rate of the State as a whole during the last decade, trends that are projected to continue. Where did that growth occur? The numbers tell the story for the state as a whole: our future is inextricably connected to reaping the benefits of increasing diversity. And, look at the story for Brown County. It’s doubly, triply, quadruply, quintuply so. This is a an enormous “brain gain” opportunity if we have the will to make it so. Numbers don’t tell the whole story. Education and the private sector have long been on board. Tomorrow we will put in front of you a diversity statement signed by 400 private sector leaders and recently published in our local paper. Unfortunately, though, a minority of our elected officials had been more comfortable fighting the battles of the past instead of building brighter futures. That dramatically changed Tuesday. I am proud to report that, Tuesday, Green Bay elected to its county and city governing boards, its first African American and its first Native American along with, I might add, a UWGB student. |
