| I have one goal above
all others this afternoon: to establish that our proposal follows from a
strategic evaluation of the pluses and minuses of the region we are privileged
to serve and from a critical self-examination of our own strengths and weaknesses. We were propelled by a sense of urgency. Those who best understand what is happening in our region would speak of a five-year – decade at the most – opportunity to successfully make the shift to a knowledge-based global economy and a region in sociological transition. We began with the challenge, only four years ago, of a region that did not act regionally. There is no doubt in our minds that we will look back on this period as one in which our region fundamentally changed its understanding of what it is to be a region. And, by the way, you may be proud of your 4-year and 2-year campuses in the region because they, along with our tech college partners, were pioneers in leading the way to this transformation in regional consciousness. We did not simply think this agenda up ourselves. It’s not the typical, “we in higher ed know what’s best for you” approach. We listened, in small groups, to over 2,200 people on campus and in the community before developing the growth agenda and then tested that agenda before small groups of key leaders around the region and in Madison. Our passion for the agenda is driven by our passion for our community and their support for the agenda. |
