Intercollegiate Athletics

Nationally competitive...Academically and fiscally sound
The UW-Green Bay Intercollegiate Athletics program reached new heights in 2006-07. The women’s basketball team posted what was arguably the finest season in school history, in any sport, in any division. Meanwhile, student athletes across the athletics program exhibited exemplary achievement in the classroom. The overall financial situation was positive. And Green Bay Athletics closed the year and began a new era with the relocation of offices to the brand-new, state-of-the-art Kress Events Center, the unveiling of a brand-new athletics logo, and signing of a commercial licensing agreement.

Highlights
Phoenix women make mark in Top 25, NCAA Tourney
The 2006-07 season was one for the ages for UW-Green Bay women’s basketball. The Phoenix recorded 26 straight victories, an AP Top 25 ranking for the third time in five years, a 29-4 final record, and an opening-round win in the NCAA tournament. They handled New Mexico, 59-52, before drawing national attention (and praise) for their David-and-Goliath effort vs. perennial power Connecticut in the second round. The undersized Phoenix played inspired basketball to lead at halftime before the Huskies pulled away, 94-70, to end UW-Green Bay’s Sweet 16 dreams. The season was full of milestones: fifth NCAA trip in six years, and ninth overall… a ninth straight Horizon League regular-season title… the eighth straight 20-win campaign… a 3-0 mark against Big Ten teams, including vs. the Wisconsin Badgers before a program-record crowd of about 5,200 at the Resch Center in December 2006… All-Midwest Region honors for star center Nicole Soulis, a two-time Horizon League player of the year… 29 wins a program record… 16-0 in Horizon League, first perfect year in League or forerunner since 1990… No. 22 in final AP and ESPN/USA Today poll…a national-caliber non-conference schedule with nine straight games against teams who made the NCAAs or WNIT the previous year… still more success on the academic side, where the team earned a spot in the Top 25 Team Honor Roll compiled by the national coaches’ association, with a 3.334 team GPA during the 2006-07 school year to rank No. 18 in the nation.
A promising season in men’s hoops
The men’s basketball team finished 2006-07 at 18-15 and reached the Horizon League semifinals. It was a season with many positives: two victories in the conference tournament, the most wins since 1998-99, and yet another championship in the Oneida Casino Classic. A highlight was a nationally cablecast (ESPN2) victory at archrival UW-Milwaukee in January. The program reached out to the New North Region with a new promotion by taking pre-season practices on the road to give fans a closer look in Appleton and Manitowoc.
In swimming, a Phoenix dynasty
For the third consecutive year, in 2007, the members of the UW-Green Bay women’s swimming and diving team were crowned Horizon League champions. Sophomore Danielle DeGrand, a Green Bay native, was Women’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Year, and Jim Merner was Coach of the Year. On the men’s side, senior diver Phillip Zumstein became the first Phoenix diver, male or female, to advance to the NCAA Division I regional finals.
Overall, wins outnumber losses
In other sports during 2006-07… The Men’s soccer team’s 14 wins (14-6-0) tied for fourth best in Phoenix history and was the most since 1992. UW-Green Bay reached the finals of the Horizon League tournament, and senior forward Joshua Okoampa was conference 2006 Offensive Player of the Year… In men’s golf, UW-Green Bay finished second out of seven teams, trailing only conference winner Detroit, at the Horizon League Championship… Women’s volleyball
(15-15) played its best down the stretch in fall 2006 and finished in a four-way tie for second place… in Nordic skiing, freshman star Santi Ocariz represented UW-Green Bay at the NCAA Championships at Mt. Washington Valley, N.H., placing 35th in the 10K freestyle before and 37th in the 20K classic.
