Intercollegiate Athletics: Highlights (continued0

UW-Green Bay places fourth in McCafferty Trophy standings
The women’s basketball team, along with the women’s swimming and diving team, claimed league titles in 2006-07, helping the overall UW-Green Bay Athletics program finish fourth in the McCafferty Trophy standings, the annual all-sports point system for Horizon League member institutions. The results:
      1. Butler - 49.0
      1. UIC - 49.0
      3. UW-Milwaukee - 46.0
      4. UW-Green Bay - 32.5
      5. Loyola - 32.0
      6. Wright State - 31.0
      7. Cleveland State - 27.5
      8. Detroit - 17.5
      9. Youngstown State - 13.5
Shining moment for spirit squad, pep band
“Neutral and anonymous” observers who followed the Phoenix women to Hartford, Conn., and two games in the NCAA Division I tournament reported that the band and spirit squads from UW-Green Bay (enrollment approximately 6,000), were the equal or better of their counterparts from much-larger New Mexico (enrollment 26,399) and UConn (24,000). It was described as just another way in which our students ‘do us proud’ on a national stage, highlighting the great job done by faculty, staff and students.
A change in leadership for a marquee sport
UW-Green Bay announced in May that Matt Bollant would become the new Phoenix women’s basketball coach. Bollant spent five seasons at Bryan (Tenn.) College, where the Lions went 134-38 as an NAIA power; prior to that, he was an assistant at Indiana and Evansville. The Green Bay job opened with the resignation after nine seasons of Kevin Borseth, who left to coach the Michigan Wolverines.
Phoenix Fund drive sets fundraising record
The 2006-07 Phoenix Fund annual campaign reported an all-time record in fundraising with $387,745, announced at the year-end victory celebration. That surpassed the goal of $375,000. Total membership increased by 25 percent, from 612 members to 765.
The debut of uwgbathletics.cstv.com
Phoenix Athletics took a step forward in late 2006 with the debut of uwgbathletics.cstv.com/ as the new internet home for UW-Green Bay Athletics. The program entered into a partnership with sports/media giant CSTV.com to host the Phoenix pages. Advantages included convenience, opportunities for additional revenue via advertising and sponsorships on a third-party site and, not insignificant, the centralized-server responsibility of video streaming sporting events in mass quantities.
Green Bay Athletics unveils new insignia
In June 2007, Green Bay Athletics unveiled its new athletics insignia, wordmark and logo, a variation on the rising Phoenix of myth and legend. The program also announced that “UWGB” would be de-emphasized in favor of the simple identifier “Green Bay.” The introduction of the new images coincided with the department’s visual identity program, a plan to enhance Green Bay Athletics’ visibility.
Green Bay Athletics contracts with national licensing agency
Green Bay Athletics announced it will use the services of The Licensing Resource Group, Inc. in the trademarking of the new insignia, wordmark and image. Such a licensing agreement is common among college-sports programs nationwide. The agreement also covers commercial use of the primary University of Wisconsin-Green Bay logos and marks. It remains University policy, however, that all University offices, organizations, departments and affiliated organizations (ex. Alumni Association) may use the primary institutional trade names, trademarks, service marks and logos for promotional and identification purposes.
TaylorMade fundraising event was way above par
Personal tips from swing guru Jim Flick, the guy who coached Jack Nicklaus? New TaylorMade clubs? An entertaining dinner and evening with TaylorMade-adidas CEO Mark King, an industry giant who just happens to be a UW-Green Bay grad? Participants in the June 2007 “TaylorMade Just Fore You” golf extravaganza had rave reviews for the first-ever event, which raised well over $30,000 for Phoenix athletics scholarships.
Women’s golf rises as newest sport
It was announced that a women’s golf team would tee it up in 2007-08 for its first season. The addition of the 16th sport for UW-Green Bay Athletics added opportunities for female student athletes, enhanced gender equity and gave the Horizon League a critical mass of six schools eligible for NCAA tournament play.
Hall of Fame adds three hoops greats (and reigning coach of year)
Three of UW-Green Bay basketball’s greatest names joined the Phoenix Athletics Hall of Fame in May. Founding women’s basketball coach Carol Hammerle and 1990s men’s players Tony Bennett and Ben Johnson made up the 2007 class. Bennett, the most decorated player in Phoenix basketball history, was fresh off his selection as National Coach of the Year for turning Washington State into a Top 10 program in his first season as head coach.
NCAA Certification begins
UW-Green Bay Athletics undertook a comprehensive self-study in 2006-07 in anticipation of a full review and site team visit by an NCAA Certification team in fall 2007. The effort involved a broad cross-section of campus, community, academic and athletics representatives. The NCAA certifies programs on the basic of academic, competitive and fiscal integrity.
Academic All-America honors for Gross, Schactner
Stephanie Gross of the UW-Green Bay women’s soccer team was named a CoSIDA/ESPN first-team Academic All-American for fall 2006. The senior in human development then became the first Phoenix student athlete selected to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Award. Congratulations went also to Mike Schachtner, who was named to the men’s basketball third team with 15.1 points per game and a 3.844 grade point average.
Passing grades in annual NCAA academic progress report
All UW-Green Bay men’s and women’s athletics teams received passing grades in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) report released by the NCAA. The rolling report covered a span of three academic years ending with the 2005-06 school year. The tennis teams led the pack among Phoenix squads, ranking in the top 10 percent nationally.
Achieving academic success in 2007
In spring semester 2007, the strong academic work continued:
• A fifteenth straight semester of at least a 3.0 grade point average.
• A combined GPA for all Phoenix student-athletes of 3.14.
• Nine sports teams registered a GPA of 3.00 or better, led by Women’s Volleyball with a 3.64.
• 73 student-athletes achieved academic honors (a 3.5 GPA or better) while 26 student-athletes achieved highest honors with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Closing the Sports Center in style
The UW-Green Bay women went 17-1 at home during 2006-07, the final year in the old Phoenix Sports Center, to make the all-time tally since 1976 an impressive 303-64. The final two wins were classics, with an OT win vs. rival UW-Milwaukee in the Horizon semifinals and a commanding, near-flawless performance vs. Butler to advance to the NCAAs. A closing ceremony brought back players from previous eras for a mid-court celebration of winning Phoenix tradition.
June migration to Kress Events Center
In June 2007, with work mostly done on UW-Green Bay’s $33 million Kress Events Center, administrative offices for the Phoenix Athletics program began moving into new headquarters. Funded through a collaboration involving student fees, private donations and state of Wisconsin contribution, the new facility provides an all-purpose events center for campus and represents a near-total makeover and expansion of the old Phoenix Sports Center. The new 4,000-capacity seating area doubles as home floor for UW-Green Bay women’s basketball and volleyball. A new fitness center serves the student body. And a new suite of offices provides a suitable home base for the highly regarded NCAA Division I athletics program.
