Annual Report to the campus, community, and UW System | December 2007 The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Bruce Shepard, Chancellor International Education Committing to international connections During the 2006-07 academic year UW-Green Bay renewed its commitment to making international education a part of every student’s education. Prominent in those efforts were international travel courses and exchanges, the presence of students from other nations on campus, international visitors, and a push to give global issues more visibility across the curriculum. Highlights Strengthening Jordanian connections Building on its successful “Journey to Jordan” Institute and a residency the previous academic year by Visiting Fulbright Scholar Prof. Ibtesam al-Atiyat of Jordan, UW-Green Bay pursued collaborative opportunities for strengthening the relationship. Dr. Eid Dirani of the University of Jordan in November and representatives of the new North American Jordanian Association visited in November. The result was a signed agreement calling for greater, future collaborations with the University of Jordan. Key to current efforts was a $150,000 grant from the U.S. Department of State to fund an Arabic Language Institute in summer of 2006. The “Journey to Jordan” Institute sent more than a dozen high school students from across the United States to the University of Jordan in Amman for intensive Arabic language study and cultural activities. UW-Green Bay faculty and staff made the trip, as well. Mohammad H. Mousa Maharmeh, head teacher at a school for the gifted and talented in Amman, was a guest lecturer in fall. Promoting local business/education partnerships with Italy Chancellor Bruce Shepard invited Green Bay community leaders to a campus luncheon in September 2006 for the regional Consul General of Italy, promoting U.S./Italy connections in education, business and culture. The luncheon was attended by Mayor James Schmitt, Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce President Paul Jadin, UW-Green Bay faculty and staff, and members of the Green Bay area Club Italo/Americano. Also attending were senior staff and CEOs of Green Bay area companies with Italian ownership and involvement, and representatives of local educational institutions. Partnership grows with Del Bianco Foundation In May 2007, UW-Green Bay became the first American university to honor Paolo Del Bianco with an honorary doctoral degree. Chancellor Shepard noted that “ UW-Green Bay was among the first American universities to develop a collaborative agreement with the Del Bianco Foundation, and has a lengthening history of exchanges and joint initiatives.” A humanitarian, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Mr. Del Bianco took action after the fall of the Berlin Wall to devote energy and finances to promoting peace, understanding, and the integration of the former Iron Curtain countries into the West. He arranges for students and faculty from former communist countries to travel to Florence, a world arts capital, to interact with students and faculty from Asia, the Far East and the United States, with UW-Green Bay a leading partner. top of page | continued . . . |
