Annual Report to the campus, community, and UW System | December 2007 The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Bruce Shepard, Chancellor Faculty/Staff Achievements, honors, recognition UW-Green Bay faculty and staff achieved distinction on regional, national and state levels during the 2006-07 fiscal year. The high quality of teaching and scholarship was brought to the forefront, as well, by new initiatives of the UW-Green Bay faculty and the Office of Academic Affairs. Many of the initiatives focused on celebrating and encouraging creative approaches to teaching and learning. A Sampling Published authors Prof. Gregory Aldrete’s new book, Floods of the Tiber in Ancient Rome, released in spring 2007 by Johns Hopkins University Press, described how the Romans dealt with floods and offered lessons for modern cities such as New Orleans… The 2nd Edition of Prof. Ismail Shariff’s book International Trade: Theory and Policy was released in February by a subsidiary of the Wadsworth Publishing Company… Physics Prof. Anjani K. Mehra of the Natural and Applied Sciences faculty wrote Discovering the Cosmos, a 274-page softcover for use in introductory courses in astronomy that often enroll students who are not science majors… Human Development Prof. Illene Noppe was a contributor to Linda Goldman’s book, Raising Our Children to Be Resilient, which featured a section on Noppe’s research, “Adolescents’ and Teachers’ Responses to September 11: A Qualitative Study.”… Societies, Networks, and Transitions, published by Houghton Mifflin, was the product of 10 years of research and writing by Prof. Craig Lockard of Social Change and Development, encouraging students of history to think about the broad implications of people, events and changes… Stefan T. Hall, assistant professor of Humanistic Studies, published a book titled The Role of Medieval Scottish Poetry in Creating Scottish Identity: Textual Nationalism… Prof. Andrew Kersten challenged readers to reconsider the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and its influence on 20th century history with Labor’s Home Front: The American Federation of Labor during World War II… Prof. Bob Howe was a driving force behind the Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Wisconsin, a 602-page, full-color book, a birder’s delight detailing distribution and general information for 237 species of Wisconsin birds. He was a co-editor and author of major sections of the book… The second edition of Public Policy: Politics, Analysis, and Alternatives, a public policy textbook by UW-Green Bay political scientists Michael Kraft and Scott Furlong, was published by CQ Press… Additionally, an MIT Press book co-edited by Prof. Kraft, Business and Environmental Policy: Corporate Interests in the American Political System, analyzed the degree to which American businesses succeed in influencing environmental policy. Prof. Furlong contributed a chapter. Winners of campus Founders Association Awards for Excellence Recipients for the 2006-07 academic year were: Teaching - Prof. Aeron Haynie Scholarship - Prof. Greg Aldrete Institutional Development - Prof. Emeritus Ken Fleurant Collaborative Achievement - Voyageur magazine Community Outreach - Prof. John Katers Classified support - Pam Spangenberg Academic Support - Deb Anderson Sabbaticals for standout teachers/researchers The Board of Regents voted in December 2006 to approve 2007-08 sabbaticals for UW System professors including an impressive list of eight faculty scholars at UW-Green Bay. Those honored were: Forrest Baulieu, Information and Computing Science, to study an object-oriented programming language and develop a new upper-level course; Derryl Block, Nursing, for health and environmentally related federal public policy advocacy and research on public health nursing competency; David Dolan, Natural and Applied Sciences, for a textbook and graduate course in applied statistics for the aquatic sciences; Harvey Kaye, Social Change and Development, to research and write a book tentatively entitled, “FDR, The Four Freedoms, The Greatest Generation, and Us: Hye-Kyung Kim, Humanistic Studies, for research on integrating Western, Asian, Ancient Greek, and Eastern philosophies and approaches to teaching and research; Ganga Nair, Natural and Applied Sciences, to develop an atlas of dangerous tree diseases that describes their invasive characteristics and how they can be controlled; Lisa Poupart, Humanistic Studies, to take part in traditional First Nations oral teachings and study the traditional teaching and learning methods of tribal Elders; and Lynn Walter, Social Change and Development, to analyze the current state of research in sustainable agri-food systems, healthy eating, and food security internationally Voelker, Bauer-Dantoin chosen for select UW teaching program Selected to join a select group as participants for the 2006-2007 academic year in a UW System program aimed at supporting development of outstanding college teachers were David J. Voelker, assistant professor of Humanistic Studies (History) and Angela Bauer-Dantoin, associate professor of Human Biology and Women’s Studies (Biology). top of page | continued . . . |
