Introduction The Growth Agenda New Mission Advancement Building the Campus Institutional News Sustainability,         Environmental Awareness Weidner Center Phuture Phoenix Diversity International Education Outreach, Community Service Lectures, Cultural Enrichment Intercollegiate Athletics Faculty/Staff Students Transition		Annual Report to the campus, community, and UW System | December 2007 The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Bruce Shepard, Chancellor Period for this report — This summary of institutional highlights for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is for the 2006-07 academic year, or the period July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007. Also listed are selected events and activities from fall 2007 that represent a continuation or culmination of major initiatives in progress. Introduction University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard, in his August 2006 convocation address to open the academic year, encouraged the faculty and staff to look to the University’s origins for guidance as they help build “the next UWGB.”       “I am again asking if we can step outside our comfort zones,” Shepard said, “like those who built the first UWGB, to think creatively about ourselves and our University.”       UW-Green Bay will not progress by clinging to the status quo. If anything, he said, “I believe we need to experiment more.”       He reminded the campus community that their University, founded in the 1960s in the spirit of innovation and experimentation, gained national attention for its emphasis on problem-solving, interdisciplinary education and its commitment to the environment.       Then, he laid out priorities for the year: • Growth Agenda — Create the political will needed to enact the Growth Agenda, a plan to grow UW-Green Bay to meet demands and needs of the region, as well as a growth plan for the UW System. • Diversity — Continue and expand the commitment to diversifying our faculty and staff, and rise to meet the institution’s single greatest challenge if it is to succeed as Green Bay’s University of Wisconsin. • Phuture Phoenix — Transition the award-winning program — which encourages disadvantaged youngsters to pursue a college education — from being a volunteer initiative to a regular, ongoing part of UW-Green Bay. • Capital Campaign — Follow up successful fundraising for the Kress Events Center with Phase II of the Capital Campaign and its focus on academic needs, student scholarships (including those for Phuture Phoenix participants) and related areas in need of philanthropic support. • New mission statement — Update the mission statement but retain the focus on interdisciplinary education — a hallmark of UW-Green Bay since the University’s earliest days — and the commitment to serving the community. • Weidner Center for the Performing Arts — Move forward with the transition to a model emphasizing campus and community uses and encouraging third-party promoters to take the lead in additional main stage programming.       This report revisits those goals, a year or more later, and reveals UW-Green Bay to have made significant strides.       These achievements were possible because the UW-Green Bay campus community — students, faculty and staff — worked with each other and with partners from beyond the campus borders to live up to the University’s call to action: “Connecting learning to life.”   top of page    |     continued . . .
