Examples of 'connecting'
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay takes pride in “Connecting learning to life.”
The phrase, and the word “connecting” itself, capture the essence of a UW-Green Bay education: Students are expected to make connections across different areas of study, to examine issues from multiple perspectives and to work effectively with specialists from various fields. Students, connect with real-life issues through research, service, team projects and internships. And — as this section of the report emphasizes — the University and all its people connect to the community and serve the region, its institutions and agencies, its businesses and citizens.
Although examples are literally too numerous to list, these entries illustrate the range of activities.

A sampling
Outreach unveils new downtown lecture series
UW-Green Bay kicked off a new downtown lecture series in October 2006. Downtown Third Thursdays drew citizens interested in hearing faculty expertise in monthly, topical lectures at the Baylake Bank Learning Center. Speakers were political scientist Scott Furlong on politics, Dean Fritz Erickson on electronic bullying, Donald McCartney on the Green Bay brand, Denise Bartell on notions of romantic love in America, Cheryl Grosso on love for music, and Jolanda Sallman on sexual-assault awareness.
Oxford series opens campus to community
The Oxford Lecture Series, an ongoing series of general-interest lectures open to students and the community, tackled a variety of topics. Typical of the attempt to put advanced topics in context for a lay audience was a December talk by Prof. Atife Caglar of mathematics on “Overview on Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell.” Despite the somewhat forbidding title, it explained the cells have everyday implications for the general public.
Successful ‘Nutcracker’ has UW-Green Bay flavor
A virtual sell-out for opening night typified the response when a local organization, NEWDO — the Northeastern Wisconsin Dance Organization — lifted the curtain on a community production of a fully staged “Nutcracker” ballet at the Meyer Theatre in December 2006. UW-Green Bay Prof. Jeff Entwistle handled design and technical work, and staff member Jodi Radtke was stage manager. Cyndie Shepard, a member of the board, enlisted her husband, Chancellor Bruce Shepard, to play a part in the production, which enjoyed both critical and box-office success.
UW-Green Bay honors, advocates for veterans
Veterans’ services coordinator Elaina Koltz received e-mailed “thank yous” from UW-Green Bay students on active military duty for care packages originated at UW-Green Bay. The packages were part of the Honoring Our Veterans initiative announced by Chancellor Bruce Shepard. Elements include an annual reception honoring veterans, certificates of appreciation to those who returned after active duty, and the care packages to those presently serving. On a related topic, Chancellor Shepard and the University lobbied hard for adequate state funding of a much-deserved tuition waiver for veterans. “Our soldiers did not duck their duty,” the chancellor said, criticizing one proposal that would have had the effect of creating a tuition surcharge. “They defended all of us, not just the UW students (who some are) proposing pay for the veterans’ education. We should all proudly pay.” Additionally, the University hosted a reception for campus navy veterans and distinguished visitors in September, in connection with the christening of the USS Green Bay transport vessel and a visit by several crew members to its namesake city.
Steps to Make a Difference’ really did…
More than 200 walkers raised nearly $12,000 for six nonprofit organizations in the fourth annual fall “Steps to Make a Difference Walk” organized by students in the Public and Nonprofit Management class and the Student Civics Club.
… drawing national recognition
The USA Weekend national magazine recognized UW-Green Bay students for the Steps to Make a Difference Walk as a shining example of ways in which communities raise money and awareness for local charitable organizations.
