Annual Report to the campus, community, and UW System | December 2007 The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Bruce Shepard, Chancellor Students Achievements, honors, recognition The 2006-07 academic year provided numerous opportunities to celebrate the high level of achievements of UW-Green Bay students. Undergraduate student research was again at the forefront. One event was the annual Posters in the Rotunda event in Madison, to which UW-Green Bay sent a large delegation. With 14 exhibitors, it was among the largest campus contingents displaying research projects at the State Capitol. It called special attention to the institution’s success in promoting problem solving and “connecting learning to life.” (See the end of this section for the list of research exhibits.) The other showcase event was the annual UW-Green Bay Academic Excellence Symposium, a one-day campus event at which nearly 120 of the institution’s best and brightest students from a broad array of majors exhibited more than 60 projects. A sampling of student achievements Symposium work leads to UW-Green Bay accessibility project The Division of State Facilities approved a $146,500 project to make some campus restrooms more accessible for people with disabilities. The projects were completed in 2007. Former Social Work students Rachel Kelbert and Stephanie Duscher helped raise awareness of the need, particularly for those in wheelchairs. (Their poster and video during the student research symposium drew attention to the issue.) Marketing interns offer advice to major Green Bay packer Student marketing interns Lydia Nelson and Stiliana Georgieva presented results of their summer 2006 research to staff at American Foods Group. The young women were believed to be the first non-engineering interns taken on locally by American Foods, one of the world’s largest meatpackers with nearly $1 billion in annual sales and more than 1,500 employees at the Green Bay plant alone. Their topic, Halal Marketing, reflected growing industry interest in marketing to the world’s estimated two billion Muslim consumers by adhering to certain processing and trade practices. SIFE team takes second in case study competition A team from the UW-Green Bay chapter of Students in Free Enterprise won second place in a case-study analysis “Duel in Dairyland” competition in June at UW-Madison. Students Matt Winden, Crystal Schliefer, Oris Vannieuwenhoven and Pernille Sorenson presented a case study about the financial strain for a young married couple that was expecting children, then drafted a budget and long-term financial goals for the couple. top of page | continued . . . |
