Marking the passing of the campus founder
A short note in the faculty/staff newsletter prompted a flurry of cards and e-mails to Chancellor Emeritus Edward Weidner on Oct. 6, 2006, congratulating him on the 40th anniversary of his appointment as Founding Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Many others congratulated Dr. Weidner in person, the next time they saw him, which for most didn’t involve a very long wait. He and his, wife, Marge, were regular, loyal supporters at UW-Green Bay special events, performances and basketball games.
Ed Weidner passed away peacefully June 6, 2007 after a long illness. He was 85.

Tributes poured in following the death of Edward Weidner, the individual who was the institution’s first employee and driving force. He was the architect who oversaw development of the bayshore campus and its groundbreaking curriculum, and he assembled a national-caliber faculty and staff. He would serve 20 years as chancellor, which ranks among the longest tenures in UW System history.
Green Bay’s local newspaper, just hours after his passing, paid tribute to his life’s work by describing him as “one of the leading figures in Green Bay in the 20th century.”
Commented friend and current UW-Green Bay Chancellor, Bruce Shepard, “We are, in so many ways, Dr. Weidner’s University of Wisconsin: as the direct expression of his revolutionary vision for higher education, as the product of his tireless hard work, and, even after his retirement, as the focus of his caring, concern, and commitment.”
Ed Weidner is survived by his wife, Marge, his children Nancy, Karen and Bill, their spouses, and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean, and oldest son, Gary. A fund to benefit students was established in his name at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
