Annual Report to the campus, community, and UW System | December 2007 The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Bruce Shepard, Chancellor Weidner Center Shift in programming follows repositioning An increase in cultural and entertainment programming meant the lights were on with more regularity during spring 2007 at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts at UW-Green Bay. The upsurge in events was a welcome development on campus and in the community. A year earlier, the University took painful but necessary steps in cutting most of the center’s staff positions, exiting the Broadway theatre business, and ceasing to be the primary local booking agent for touring music, dance and theatre productions. The staff and programming cuts were made as national trends hit home and annual losses approached $2 million, exhausting the facility’s cash reserves from its 1990s heydays. Highlights Weidner Presents Weidner Center Presents, Inc., booked its first show — “American Idol” Taylor Hicks — for March 2007. They soon followed up with announcement of their first full series, for the 2007-08 year, and began selling tickets for a range of theatrical, comedy, classical and pop music performances. UW-Green Bay student groups anchor performance lineup Student choral groups and instrumental ensembles continued to account for regular, several-times-a-semester use of the Weidner’s main hall, the 2,000-seat Cofrin Family Hall. Student recitals and honors concerts were booked into the smaller Fort Howard (recital) Hall. The UW-Green Bay Theatre Program performs several shows annually in the intimate Jean Weidner Theatre. Other local users included the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra and the crowd-pleasing Allouez Village Band. Shift in ticketing operations Effective with September 2006, tickets for all performing arts events at UW-Green Bay became available for purchase through a new entity, University Ticketing Services. UTS combines the expertise of the former ticket office of the Weidner Center and the central location and services of the University Information Center in the University Union. UTS handles ticketing for events in the Weidner Center’s Cofrin Family Hall and Jean Weidner Theater, the University Theater in Theatre Hall and other on-campus venues. top of page | continued . . . |
