Professor of the Year....
and faculty as researchers, public intellectuals
UW-Green Bay Professor Regan A. R. Gurung, (Human Development and psychology) was formally recognized last fall as the Wisconsin Professor of the Year. The recognition came from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
Prof. Gurung is a nationally prominent scholar and researcher, a leader of several major professional organizations. He co-directs the UW-Green Bay’s Teaching Scholars program, and serves on the UW System’s OPID Executive Committee improving teaching across the entire UW System.
A sampling of other faculty achievements during the year:
- History Prof. Greg Aldrete was presented with the 2009 Excellence in Teaching Award from the American Philological Association. In essence, he was named best classics professor in the nation by the leading association of classics professors. Aldrete and his student research assistant continued to garner attention — locally and internationally — for their research into the linen armor that was worn by Alexander the Great and his conquering armor. TV crews from major U.S. and European networks have taped segments showing that their handmade fabric “armor” can withstand axe and arrow;
- Prof. Derryl Block of the Nursing faculty, and our Interim Dean of the College of Professional and Graduate Studies, received a national award from the Association of Community Health Nursing Educators in recognition of service to the organization and promotion of high quality education to improve public health;
- History Prof. Harvey Kaye was interviewed by the BBC, authored numerous op-ed columns, and appeared on the nationally televised “Bill Moyers’ Journal” interview show on the Public Broadcasting System. His topic was his new book on revolutionary figure and political writer Thomas Paine, and Paine’s continuing (and ever-greater) relevance to American political thought;
- Religious studies Prof. Derek Jeffreys was interviewed in Harper’s Magazine about his new book on the morality of torture, and he contributed commentary to the New York Times about the “war” between science and religion;
- Prof. Ryan Martin of Human Development was quoted in a Newsweek story about “The Fat Wars” and the increasingly open derision targeted at obese Americans;
- Faculty members Ray Hutchison of Urban and Regional Studies John Stoll of Public and Environmental Affairs and Don McCartney of Business Administration collaborated on a key feasibility study regarding the potential for container shipping at the Port of Green Bay.
